We don’t know what we’re having yet but have a boy’s name sorted. Need your help with girls names please! We’re in Scotland. What’s your opinions on these for a girl?

  • Nairn
  • Blaire
  • Munro
  • Blythe

Blaire the best -the rest are really not great from my opinion!

LadyGAgain · 25/03/2023 09:26

Sorry I don't like any of those.
Quinn would be my choice.

lupinlass · 25/03/2023 09:34

They're all hideous op. All of them.

LittleBearPad · 25/03/2023 09:38

Blythe is the nicest of that list but none are very nice. Sorry. There’s such lovely Scottish girls names that surely something else might work

barca123 · 25/03/2023 10:11

Love Blythe!

barca123 · 25/03/2023 10:11

Wow.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 25/03/2023 10:13

They’re all awful sorry! Nairn is a town and Nairns is a brand of oatcake.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 25/03/2023 10:14

barca123 · 25/03/2023 10:11

Wow.

@barca123 , @lupinlass is only being honest!

Forget Quinn just opt for Quim and give the poor girl a lifetime of teasing!

barca123 · 25/03/2023 10:20

I know but I just think that there’s a way to say it more kindly, particularly at a time a woman is hormonal and probably anxious about the birth and the name. But that’s mumsnet I guess!

Agreed. I have doubts this post is real.

Isoqueen · 25/03/2023 10:24

Isla? I don’t like any of those you mentioned, sorry. Any family names you could use?

Nalupa · 25/03/2023 10:58

Blaire is nice

KirstenBlest · 25/03/2023 11:55

Blaire is nice
No it's not. It's a surname with an e added on the end.
You'd probably like Campbelle or Graye

Heathcloverpeaches · 25/03/2023 14:24

Blythe or Blair

No, I don't like Campbelle or Graye.

Names are subjective. I'm sure you like some names that I think are horrible. I don't love Blaire, but it's nicer than the others imo.

Yesthatismychildsigh · 25/03/2023 17:13

Blythe is ok. The others are ridiculously bad.

Kam610 · 25/03/2023 17:19

Nairn as in the little town beside Inverness?

Sorry but I don't really like any of those. Munro is definitely a boys name. If I had to pick one it would be Blaire, but my friends' son is called Blair, so I think of it as a boys name too.

If you want Scottish sounding names, how about Eilidh, Elsie, Isla, Ailsa or Morag?

nameXname · 25/03/2023 19:43

Blair - in Gaelic, it means field and in conjunction with descriptors eg adjectives is often pronounced 'Blaar'; (eg Blamore (anglicised) = big field)

Nairn - poor but picturesque fishing village now rather overtaken by wealthy non Scots and u/c Scots for holiday homes. Nice place but would you name a child Southwold (rather the English equivalent)?

Munro - name of a famous hill-walker/scrambler/ climber and the peaks he 'bagged'. In his day, he was very, very admirable.

Like two previous names, = a surname. Fine to give the name to a child if (eg) they are the only one left in their generation, or if you have close relatives with the name, but otherwise, there's - I'm sorry - a hint of cultural appropriation. Otherwise, I suppose, go ahead; it is, after all, just a surname.

Apologies if you are Scottish and/or have personal/family justifications.

Yip sadly MN seems to be an outlet for some people’s pent up frustrations in other areas of life but that’s what you expect when you post on here

Also just to add I know four children called Nairn, 3 boys and a girl. I know two called Munro so they are fairly commonly used in my area, possibly not in England though which is where I assume most of you are from

I like Blaire best from your list followed by Blythe but slightly put off the latter by PP reminding me of the Northumberland town of the same name.

I wouldn’t be out off by the fact some people consider them ‘boy’s names’, I quite like an androgynous name for a girl.

There’s a girl in DD’s school named Arran which I quite like too (her brother is Harris so bit of a Scottish theme there too.

PinkSyCo · 25/03/2023 22:43

Blimey, don’t you like girls very much OP?

Carsarelife · 25/03/2023 23:05

I like them all except Nairn
