Could you comment on our list to help us pick the perfect name?

Clio (pronounced like Cleo, but we like it spelt like the muse)
Lily
Eva (we prefer this said the European way so more like EH-va with a long EH sound)
Chloe
Emma
Fiona
Lilou
Shelby
Ruby
Isabelle
Cassandra
Isabella
Emmie
Ellie
Eleanor "Ellie"

We need to narrow it down a bit, to find our top 10 and then go from there. Thanks for your help, comments appreciated.

I like Clio, Eva and Ruby best

I like Clio, Eva and Ruby best

Agree with this. I'm not keen on Fiona or Emma/Emmie

Meandfour · 24/03/2023 13:23

I only like Eva & Ruby but I’m confused by your pronunciation of Eva. Are you saying it like Ava?

Lilou is awful. Sounds like a swimming pool inflatable.

XelaM · 24/03/2023 13:23

It would be a nightmare to be called Clio with that spelling as it would always be misspelled. My daughter's friend is called Eva (pronounced Eh-va as she's from Eastern Europe) but everyone calls her Ee-va (against her mother's wishes). I don't think you can force people to pronounce it in an alternative way. So I would cross those two names off your list.

The other names are all nice, although I don't particularly like Fiona.

CoolCalmCollected · 24/03/2023 13:24

Eleanor is the nicest name on your list imo. Ruby is cool too.

If you like Lily and Lilou, have you considered Lilith?

cherrypippie · 24/03/2023 13:24

You'll get a lot of hate on mumsnet over Ellie as it was very very popular in England for many years and is often described on here as twee, wet and proletariat. It's reducing in popularity and is low down in the top 100 however other EL names such as Ella, Elsie, Elizabeth, Eliza, Eleanor and Elodie are all popular atm.

Lily, Eva, Emma, Ruby.

I like Cassie as a nickname for Cassandra and Isobel spelt like that.

cherrypippie · 24/03/2023 13:26

Sorry: Lily, Eva, Emma and Ruby are my favourites.

PizzaPastaWine · 24/03/2023 13:30

Cleo - like it.

Clio - I'd think you've named your DD after a car.

Nalupa · 24/03/2023 13:32

Clio - Very nice, haven't met any.

Lily - I love this name, beautiful, but think it is overused.

Eva - Another one I adore, but there are many of them around right now.

Chloe - A bit dated, I don't really see many small ones (was very popular when I were at school in the 00s)... I actually think it's very pretty.

Emma - Dull... I like Imma though.

Fiona - I have a bad association, I'm not keen

Lilou - Quite pretty, haven't heard it in life.

Shelby - Never met one. I think it's really cute for a child but also works as an adult.

Ruby - Lovely, very common atm though again.

Isabelle - Beautiful, I think it's nicer than Isabella.

Cassandra - It has a dated feel to me but it is a very classy name. Cassie is a beautiful nn.

Isabella - Much prefer Isabelle

Emmie - Cute, better than Emma. Have you considered Emer?

Ellie - Common and boring to me.

Eleanor "Ellie" - I don't like Eleanor or Ellie.

My top 5 from your list would be:

Isabelle
Shelby
Clio
Chloe
Lilou

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 24/03/2023 13:44

I like Ruby and Isabelle (Izzy) most on your list.

I think the pronunciation of Eva will be confusing, assuming you are in UK

Cassiehopes · 24/03/2023 14:21

I like Cleo - spelled like this - and Eleanor, but hate Ellie. I like nickname Nell though. Eva is always said with a long e sound? So confused by this comment.

Cassiehopes · 24/03/2023 14:22

Cassia is much nicer than Cassandra and still gets cute Cassie nickname if that’s why you like it? Also Cassia is fresh and beautiful but rare

XelaM · 24/03/2023 14:23

Cassiehopes · 24/03/2023 14:21

Not always. It's pronounced Yeh-va in Eastern Europe and Ee-fa in German.

XelaM · 24/03/2023 14:23

I mean Eh-fa in German

LonelyInTheOcean · 24/03/2023 14:33

Clio - I quite like it, but it sounds like a cat’s name to me, I don’t know why.

Lily - I like the name, but there are a lot of Lily’s

Eva - I think the way you want it pronounced, it will get mispronounced depending on where you live in the world.

Chloe - I like this name. It has a 90s feel, but at the same time it’s a nice name.

Emma -timeless name that I like.

Fiona - no, too old-fashioned sounding in a bad way.

Lilou - no, sounds like a character in a children’s TV show

Shelby - really do not like

Ruby - a nice name. I hear it less these days, though do know a child called Ruby.

Isabelle - every other child’s name, though it was on my name list when I was pregnant because I do like the name.

Cassandra - no. Really, really dislike this name. I would prefer just Cassie.

Isabella - again, every other child’s name. There are 3 in my daughters class.

Emmie - Don’t like. Sounds more like a nickname.

Ellie
Eleanor "Ellie" - I know 4 women called Ellie, none of them are very nice and it clouds my judgement on this name. Eleanor I really don’t like.

FayCarew · 24/03/2023 14:50

Clio (pronounced like Cleo, but we like it spelt like the muse) - OK
Lily - Overused
Eva (we prefer this said the European way so more like EH-va with a long EH sound) - It tends to be said with a short Eh sound in mainland Europe, and it's very popular said as ee-va. You'd be insisting on a unique pronunciation.
Chloe - was too popular about 20 yrs ago
Emma - fine
Fiona - ok
Lilou - sounds like a brand of tampons
Shelby - no
Ruby - ok
Isabelle - overused
Cassandra - ok, Cassie is nice
Isabella - overused
Emmie - no
Ellie - overused
Eleanor "Ellie" - overused

bowlofsmarties · 24/03/2023 15:02

I know a brilliant Ellie for what it's worth (my 9yo) she's a sweet, bright lovely little pumpkin. If she was born today I would give her a different name because it got way too popular!

I really like Fiona :) what about Leona? congratulations!

bowlofsmarties · 24/03/2023 15:11

We have a Lucy too, what about that? It fits with the style of your list

jasminesunflower · 24/03/2023 15:28

thanks so far!

it is pronounced eh-va with a long EH in my husband's home country that I don't want to name for privacy reasons, but it's a legit pr. in a European country. I know the pr. with a short EH exists in some European countries too.

Clio - nice but makes me think of the car
Lily - nice but overdone
Eva - love this but you would have to correct people on the pronunciation which could get tedious
Chloe - lovely, due a comeback I think
Emma - classic but a bit boring for me
Fiona - not a fan
Lilou - I wouldn't know how to pronounce this tbh
Shelby - like this one
Ruby - lovely
Isabelle - not a fan
Cassandra - not a fan
Isabella - not a fan
Emmie - lovely
Ellie - lovely
Eleanor "Ellie"

My favourites are Chloe, Ruby, Shelby and Eleanor (nn Ellie).

FlounderingFruitcake · 24/03/2023 15:38

I’d take Shelby over Clio because if you’re going to name your daughter after a car you should definitely make it an expensive classic and not a cheap run around.

But being serious, I like Isabelle and Cassandra best of all. Chloe and Eleanor/Ellie are also nice and IME not overused at all for little ones.

TomatoSandwiches · 24/03/2023 15:45

Clio
Emma
Fiona
Cassandra or Kasserine
Emmie

Paesano · 24/03/2023 16:40

I'm not keen on Fiona or Emma. Fiona just sounds really dated and I have never met a nice Emma.

Twoinapod · 24/03/2023 17:48

Clio is a car, might be setting her up for some “take a ride in Clio” jokes when a teen.

Eva if your in UK it will end up as Ee-va.

I like Isabelle, Lily and Eleanor, I don’t like the others.

17caterpillars1mouse · 24/03/2023 18:45

I only like Chloe and Ruby from your list but wanted to add there is an Eva pronounced Eh-va in dds preschool and it doesn't seem to be an issue, everyone pronounced it Eh-va

Shelby is a really down-market name in my area
