Love Sonny
Only problem is surname begins with an s and two syllables
Do you think alliteration is a no go for names?

I think Sonny is a no go regardless of surname to be honest. It's a nickname. But yes, I think Sonny Smythe doesn't sound brilliant.

Bunnyhascovidnoteggs · 23/03/2023 12:43

As long as your surname isn't Delight op go for it.

user1492757084 · 23/03/2023 12:44

You can always call any boy Sonny for a nick name.
Choose another name that sounds better with surname and will be a better fit for when he is a grown man.

KirstenBlest · 23/03/2023 12:45

Sunny is better. Sonny doesn't seem like a name for a grown man.

I'd agree it sounds like a family nickname or something.
Also many people refer to their son as 'son'. 'Can you come here Son?'

Always it can be used in a derogatory way as in 'what are you up to over there sonny?' or 'Sonny here thinks he knows everything about everything'

As in Sonny Jim if you google the meaning of that.

PopsicleHustler · 23/03/2023 12:46

Is your surname Jim? Lol or Days?

StopFeckingFaffing · 23/03/2023 12:47

I don't mind alliteration in general but with a name like Sonny I think you risk him sounding like a cartoon character (Billy Bunter territory)

Sorry

Rodneyyoudipstick · 23/03/2023 12:49

Just looking for thoughts on same initial to surname really
I love Sonny just not sure on the alliteration aspect
What are thoughts on same letters please

I quite like it. If people are calling kids Hunter and Roman nowadays I can’t see why Sonny is any different (we had horses called all three of those names when I was young. A friend at uni was called Sunny, short for Suniva.

Honeyroar · 23/03/2023 12:51

The alliteration wouldn’t bother me either, I quite like it.

TenThousandSpoons · 23/03/2023 12:52

Generally I like alliteration but not sure with Sonny. Cartoon character territory as someone said already.

Reugny · 23/03/2023 12:53

Nope.

Many people will know their history and putting his initials down won't look good.

Livingbestlife · 23/03/2023 13:11

Sonny is lovely

I say alliteration is fine it didnt harm the following

Sylvester stallone

Steven Spielberg

Steven seagal

Sharon stone

To name a few

Go for it 😀😀😀

Pemba · 23/03/2023 13:25

The alliteration wouldn't matter, but the name Sonny, well it's not a real name. It has connotations of 'boy' so that will be hard when he's older. It's fine as a nickname, can't you give him another name and use Sonny as a nickname? Eg Solomon, Saul, Simon, Simeon.

Snugglemonkey · 23/03/2023 13:31

I like alliteration. One of my DC has first name, middle name, last name all the same. It is a lovely name.

This.

Blossomandbee · 23/03/2023 13:34

I think it's fine unless it really clashes with your surname.
I've always liked the name, it's no less a real name than many others.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 23/03/2023 13:37

I imagine something like Sonny Simpson/Sadler/Sibley?

I'm not a fan. I actually don't think Sonny is that out there as a first name, but the alliteration makes it sound a bit comical.

MrsMitford3 · 23/03/2023 13:37

DS went to school with a boy called Sonny.
It was his name on the register/what everyone called him.

His actual name was completely unrelated-think George.
Most ppl didn't even know that-but it does give him options.
He is in his 20's and still very happily goes by Sonny

Also-I love alliterative names!

SleepingStandingUp · 23/03/2023 13:38

Sonny Seagall.
Sonny Spielberg.
I think the alliteration is fine as long as your surname isn't a noun.

I'm afraid tho I'm with the masses. The issue isn't the alliteration, it's a 49 Yr old man named Sonny. I'd at least go Solomon or Simon etc.

LonelyInTheOcean · 23/03/2023 13:38

I think it’s fine, but does depend on the surname. It would work with some surnames and not others. The alliteration itself would be less of a problem.

Pinktowelblue · 23/03/2023 13:40

Bunnyhascovidnoteggs · 23/03/2023 12:43

As long as your surname isn't Delight op go for it.

I disgree. Only if your surname is Delight should you use the name Sonny.

Sandysandwich · 23/03/2023 13:56

If its a different type of s sound I think its fine, but the same sound would be weird

Sonny Stratford is fine
Sonny Sutton sounds silly

nowaworriedmum · 23/03/2023 14:06

I really liked it, it was a name I was considering but DH didn't like it. Our surname starts with S.
