Finola

Been thinking of names for baby girl and originally set on Violet or Clementine but come across the name Finola. Was thinking it would make a good middle name but now thinking of it as a first name.

What do people think of the name or would we be better off sticking with either Violet or Clementine?

I don’t like it, but I love violet !

pawz · 12/03/2023 19:29

I like the name! Would make me assume Irish if I saw it written down. Also love Clementine - although we call our friend Clemmy (which I love too!).

ourflagmeansdeath · 12/03/2023 19:30

Finola is really not nice in my opinion and it also reminds me of Enola and that is Alone spelled backwards. You'll be better off sticking with Violet or Clementine - where my vote is for Violet.

Mandasporian · 12/03/2023 19:32

Except Finola could be Finn for short. Or Ola!I've known girls who go by both.

Clementine is sweet but Clemmy is a letter off Clammy! Not a good connection.

Hedjwitch · 12/03/2023 19:33

I like it but prefer the spelling Fionnuala

Lostmarblesfinder · 12/03/2023 19:34

I went to college with a Finola who got called Fionnuala a lot. She was ace, lots of fun so I havevonly good things to say about Finolas.

Zaliea · 12/03/2023 19:37

I really like it. More than Violet and Clementine.

Violet is lovely but most likely nickname is Vi and that sounds very elderly to me.

Clementine again is lovely as a whole name but Clem/Clemmie make me think of phlegm or claggy (just a personal association)

Whereas with Finola, I'd go for Fin or Nola, or even Noa. Probably Finola nn Nola.

I think Finola Violet works really well.

Twoinapod · 12/03/2023 20:15

Definitely Finola. I don’t like Violet and absolutely can’t stand Clementine, just sounds ridiculous as a persons name to me.

TwinsAndTiramisu · 12/03/2023 20:16

Finola sounds like a brand of premium yoghurt.

It's a no from me.

TippledPink · 12/03/2023 20:17

I worked with a Finnoula, everyone called her Fi.

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 12/03/2023 20:32

I think it's a really pretty name.

FayCarew · 13/03/2023 05:24

I know one and she's Fin.
Violet is ok but looks like Violent and gets said as Vilet.
Clementine is a fruit and Clemmie sounds like Clammy

Peridot1 · 13/03/2023 05:35

It’s a brand of shampoo

Phoebo · 13/03/2023 06:06

I love Violet

DalmationCalledStripe · 13/03/2023 06:21

How about Viola which is obviously a genuine name but also takes from both Violet and Finola? If I have another DD (never gonna happen!) she'd be Viola. Pronounced vee-ola for anyone unsure.

LivesinLondon2000 · 13/03/2023 07:22

Pretty name. But like other posters I would also assume it was a anglicised version of the Irish name Fionnuala (which I love)

LiftyLift · 13/03/2023 07:25

I use a shampoo called Fenola, but I’m not sure many people would make that connection. It’s a nice name. I went to school with a Finella, which isn’t as pretty.

Cazziebo · 13/03/2023 07:42

I know a few people with the name Fionnuala (teens/20s). Most are called Nuala - which is a lovely name. There's also a Fion and a Fyn.

YorkshireIndie · 13/03/2023 08:22

Thanks for all the comments. Got a lot to ponder on 😅

I have an Irish friend called Finola, we tend to call her Fin.
I like it but would tend to think that you have Irish heritage if named it.

Greenfairydust · 13/03/2023 08:27

Sorry but Finola sounds like it could be the name of prescribed drug for tummy ache...

Much prefer Violet or Clementine.

For those who criticised Clementine: it is a very common name in France.

LesserBohemians · 13/03/2023 08:29

Far prefer Fionnuala, like pps. Finola sounds prissy to me.

Vee-O-la is the instrument, the flower is Vie-uh-la

LightHousePanda · 13/03/2023 09:00

I don't like it sorry. Much prefer Violet or Clementine. Like others say it sounds like a brand name of medicine or something else. Although obviously once you meet a person with such a name you associate it with them.

LulooLemon · 13/03/2023 09:02

How about Fenella?
