Hello everyone,

What do you think of the name for a baby girl? The dad is Mexican and we are hoping for first name Elodia, not Elodie (Elodia is the Mexican version, to honor his grandmother) but we are gathering ideas and impressions. Middle name with be Catherine, my sister's name. Thank you.

Best

Crystal

Elodia pronounced with emphasis on the i?

I think it sounds very pretty!

FatGirlSwim · 05/03/2023 11:45

Beautiful

SuperSange · 05/03/2023 11:46

Ooh, no. Elodea is pond weed. Spelled differently but sounds the same.

Jesko · 05/03/2023 11:47

Is it pronounced eh-lo-DEE-a?

CrystalJoy · 05/03/2023 11:48

Pronounced Elodia with accent on o. Thank you.

It’s beautiful ❤️

Jesko · 05/03/2023 11:50

Oh, like eh-LO-dee-a.

Not overly keen on it really with the pronunciation clarified. But I'm a stranger, if you love it go for it.

AnotherSpare · 05/03/2023 12:30

It's sounds beautiful! What a lovely name.

ourflagmeansdeath · 05/03/2023 13:23

I think it's pretty but there's a lot of syllables in my opinion, it's definitely a mouthful. I much much prefer Elodie but I get wanting to honour the Mexican side of your family. There's a big chance she'd go by a nickname in this case with 4 syllables so make sure you like those! But it is lovely.

Coffeellama · 05/03/2023 13:25

I think it depends on the surname as with the middle name it’s quite a mouthful

kerosene20 · 05/03/2023 13:38

I think it will be pronounced by most as el-oh-dear. Makes me think of odour straight away. Lovely with the Mexican pronunciation but I think it will be butchered if in England.

Elodia Catherine sounds calm and the two names go well together.

Viviennemary · 05/03/2023 14:01

Nobody will know how to pronounce it. Catherine is much better as a first name.

Endofmytether1 · 05/03/2023 14:03

Must admit that I thought of pond weed and it is a bit like 'Hello dear' in English, sorry.

Twoinapod · 05/03/2023 14:21

I think it’s lovely, unusual names don’t tend to go down so well on here. The reactions always seem way over the top compared to what you’ll encounter in real life. It’s a lovely way to honour the Mexican side and easy to say and spell. Absolutely go for it

Nobody will know how to pronounce it - Katharine, Cathryn, Catherine etc

Reddahlias · 05/03/2023 15:04

Sorry I meant 'spell'!

Pemba · 05/03/2023 16:28

I used to buy this for my goldfish!

But then, why not? No different to any other nature name eg Rose, Daisy, Ivy, Willow. I get that it honours your DP's culture and is the Spanish version of Elodie.

DuchessOfSausage · 05/03/2023 18:02

'Ello dear!
She'll be Ellie.

BevMarsh · 05/03/2023 18:08

I don't like it.
I'd choose another to honour her father's culture.
My first thought was that you'd put a unique spin on Elodie.
I personally had no idea it was a Mexican name and pretty sure I won't be in the minority.

fortifiedwithtea · 05/03/2023 18:19

Beautiful, it has meaning for you, go for it.

Lindy2 · 05/03/2023 18:21

I like Elodie and Elodia sounds nice too, particularly as the name is part of her Mexican heritage. I think it works well for living in the UK too( assuming you do).

People may ask how to pronounce it - which is fine.
She'll probably get called Ellie or Els - which is also fine.

No one will think of pond weed, unless they happen to have an unusually keen interest in ponds.

DeNeushoornHeeftEenHoorn · 05/03/2023 18:40

So it's pronounced like "'Ello dear" in a non-rhotic British accent? I'm not sure I would like that, though it looks lovely written down...

Whyarewehardofthinking · 05/03/2023 18:43

It is pond weed. Used in required practicals in GCSE science, but used since I was at school.

Please don't do that to her.

Gooseysgirl · 05/03/2023 18:49

Beautiful name!
