Names like Dolce?

Name change.

I really love the name Dolce (Doll-chee). I think the sound of it is so pretty and would be lovely on a baby and an elderly woman. DH thinks it's too linked to D&G and tacky.

Ig I'm looking for similar names?

Our other DC's names are: unisex nature (think Robin), uncommon biblical (think Moses), and the youngest is taken from a piece of fiction (think Theon-- without the negative connotations 😬 basically a name that kind of sounds like it could be a 'real' name, no crazy spelling) so we're not too fussed about them 'going together'.

*I don't like Dulce

Dulcie?

RealMcKoy · 27/02/2023 12:56

Since "Dolce" is an Italian word, yet I have never seen an Italian with the first name "Dolce", I'd knock that or any other type of foreign word that isn't a common first name in that culture or which you have no cultural ties to on the head.
I think that is quite a good boundary to start with in naming one's child.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 27/02/2023 12:57

Yeah, I think a Dolce would get lots of 'what, like Dolce and Gabbana?' 'what, like Dolce Gusto?' etc.

What about Mica pr. mee-sha?

user1492757084 · 27/02/2023 12:58

These names have Chee sounds.
Lucia - Loocheeuh
Chelsy
Katya - Kahcheeuh

aoibhacado · 27/02/2023 13:01

lucia, pronounced loo-chee-а?

PretendingToBeStupid · 27/02/2023 13:02

I'll be honest, that name screams gutter trash council estate. I'd just give them a normal name. Life is hard enough as it is, don't make it any harder for them.

Emmamoo89 · 27/02/2023 13:05

No horrible name

housemaus · 27/02/2023 13:07

Agreed with your husband, I'm afraid - people with immediately think "...and Gabbana".

Lucia as a PP suggested, although unless you've got an obviously Italian surname I think people will pronounce it Lu-see-a.

Or Francesca, nn Chesca?

Letterfor · 27/02/2023 13:07

I'm not going with Dolce, just looking for suggestions. It will stay a guilty pleasure. Or perhaps for a cat.

Ooh, Lucia is really pretty. I quite like Mica too but I think that would get butchered!

What's wrong with being from a council estate? :)

I did qualify it with saying gutter trash council estate!
I've lived on a few over the years. There are respectable people on council estates, then there are people like Holly Dance. I think you get what I mean?

massistar · 27/02/2023 13:14

It's not a first name. It's Italian for sweet.

Yeah, I got exactly what you mean. But it could have been achieved with saying 'trashy' alone, rather than tacking on council estate so everyone knew you meant 'trashy AND poor'.

And I didn't know who Holly Dance was but I googled and it appears you mean the mum of a dead child? Which is a supremely weird thing to reference!

Katya doesn't have a 'tch' sound in it. It sounds like Ka(r)t-ya, @user1492757084

MerryChristmasToYou · 28/02/2023 12:43

Isn't Dolce pronounced Doll-cheh? It means sweet.
I think it's a bit like calling a child Chanel, Dior or Armani.

slowsnow · 28/02/2023 12:57

It's nice in Italy not in the U.K. though very stripper like

CurlewKate · 28/02/2023 15:05

Just for information, please ignore if you like. Nobody in the UK was called Dolce before 2005, and only about 60 in the years since, so it barely registers as a name. Personally, I think you should never name a child anything that means people will say "Sorry, I didn't catch that" every time they say it for the rest of their lives!

Housenoob · 28/02/2023 15:08

Is it the 'ch' sound you like? Or something else?

What about Darcy? Sort of similar sounding but without the 'ch'.

I'm not sure, I just like the sound as a whole. I wanted Darcy for DD1 but DH said no 😅

We're between Luna, Nora and Alice. Going to wait until she's here I think.

Thank you for all your suggestions!

Aren’t you just delightful

ChilliBandit · 04/03/2023 14:32

Isn’t the Dolce of D&G a surname?

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 04/03/2023 14:45

Dulcie? That's a British name so pronounced Duhl-see.

JacobsCrackersCheeseFogg · 04/03/2023 14:51

Chiara. Kee-ah- ra. It's the Italian version of Claire, or so my Italian in-laws tell me.

So1invictus · 04/03/2023 14:55

Also. Not a very usual one either.

@JacobsCrackersCheeseFogg Clara is the more direct Italian correspondent to Claire, though Chiara is part of the same name family.
