Names like Dolce?

Name change.

I really love the name Dolce (Doll-chee). I think the sound of it is so pretty and would be lovely on a baby and an elderly woman. DH thinks it's too linked to D&G and tacky.

Ig I'm looking for similar names?

Our other DC's names are: unisex nature (think Robin), uncommon biblical (think Moses), and the youngest is taken from a piece of fiction (think Theon-- without the negative connotations 😬 basically a name that kind of sounds like it could be a 'real' name, no crazy spelling) so we're not too fussed about them 'going together'.

*I don't like Dulce

I'll be honest, that name screams gutter trash council estate. I'd just give them a normal name. Life is hard enough as it is, don't make it any harder for them.

What a vile comment.

I hope life starts treating you better soon x

Aren’t you just delightful

It was harshly put, but it’s certainly true that it’s a name that would cause some people to make assumptions that wouldn’t be helpful.

Alice is nice OP. Or maybe something like Marnie?

Lucyh999 · 04/03/2023 15:23

I think there are a few problems here.

  1. dolce is not a name, it’s an Italian word. Not insurmountable as an issue. Not all names are actually names, until they are.

  2. Most difficult point. You are not pronouncing it correctly, so you are contemplating giving your child a non-standard name that people who know will pronounce a certain way because it already exists as a word, and it will be the incorrect for your child’s name. Forever, they will be correcting it. It’s like calling your child ‘dessert’ but saying I’d like everyone to actually say ‘dessART’. Or ‘puddang’ Weird. The pronunciation is DOL-cheh. Maybe you’d like the plural Dolci better but the stress is still on the first syllable not the second.

  3. I touched on this but the stress is wrong. The emphasis is on the first syllable. Unfortunately in many cases, as sometimes it is cruel, but names do come with connotations or judgements and I know that’s not fair and we don’t have to agree, but using a foreign word in a weird context and pronouncing it wrong might lead people to judge your child later on. This is not my personal opinion, but it is there and unavoidable.

Fair enough you want to choose an unusual name. The problem comes when people choose a word that they’ve heard and like the sound of. The thing is, it’s already an an actual word so it has a meaning. My friend is a social worker and one person actually called their child Chlamydia. Case in point.

Either pronounce it correctly or don’t burden your child with a name that they will forever have to spell out and correct the pronunciation of. Perhaps choose another you like. Your other names are cool :)

Luna, Nora and Alice all nice. Luna is a bit hippy but hey if that’s you, it’s pretty

Bernadinetta · 04/03/2023 15:52

There’s an American female rapper called Doechii (not her birth name, but her stage name) which seems to have the sound you’re looking for.
There’s also a song called Doechii, not by the same artist but by a group called Yucky Blucky Fruitcake. It was a trending sound on Tiktok so some may recognise;
”Doechii, why don't you introduce yourself to the class? Okay?
Hi, my name's Doechii with two i's
I feel anxious when I'm high
Teachers say I talk too much
Momma say I don't talk enough”

OneCup · 04/03/2023 16:02

Luna and Nora sound similar in terms of style. I think Alice has a different vibe (but still is a lovely name!!).

Otherwise, as people have said Dulcie. If not, if you like short names, Ada, Ava, Leah, Erin?
If you like names starting with D, Dorothy (shortened to Dottie?), Delilah?

Whydoitry · 04/03/2023 16:22

Names I thought of were
Crystal
Daphne
Carly
Cherise
Cherry
Dosia / Docia
Dodie
Donna
Pandora
Adele

yepmelady · 04/03/2023 16:28

Means sweet and is a recognised old lady name.

Thank you for educating and imparting your wisdom on me 🙄
so it’s not bad enough that there is a vile comment made about a baby name but others here are going out of their way to defend and actually reason that it’s perfectly acceptable to say a name is synonymous with council estate scum.

what do you mean assumptions? Wow so the assumption is that a name you don’t like must mean someone much be council estate scum?

imagine going through life being so narrow minded and judgemental

it’s a name!! That’s all. It’s not offensive. There are kids , little kids and women called this name and so they’re all scum?

BCBird · 04/03/2023 21:15

I agree with your husband.

OnaBegonia · 04/03/2023 21:49

what an utterly vile comment.
OP Luna is one of the most popular dog names at present.
Nora/Norah is lovely.

Don’t be obtuse, a) I didn’t use that word and nothing I said implied I though it and b) unless you live under a rock you know that many names carry associations. This one has associations that aren’t helpful.

Also - calm down. This does not warrant this level of excitement.

Oof.

Can't disagree that it sounds a bit chavvy though tbh. It's like calling your child Vuitton.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 05/03/2023 02:12

'gutter trash council estate;

Anyone who talks like this just sounds ragingly insecure to me.

A real British affliction.

Katya doesn't have a 'tch' sound in it. It sounds like Ka(r)t-ya, @user1492757084

It can bring pronounced both ways. Depending on where you root it from.

I knew a Katya said
Ka tcha. Growing up I love that pronunciation of it. Not keen on the Ka(r)t-ya. pronunciation myself.

I grew up in Denmark and when British dh and I were chosing names for our children. We had the criteria of had to be pronounced the same in both languages. About 80% of our liked names went out..

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/03/2023 02:41

Darcy?
Dolly (As a pet form of Dorothy) ?

I love the Italian pronunciation of Alice, Ah-Lee-Chee.

RotundBeagle · 05/03/2023 02:44

I think Darcy sounds quite posh. Defo not a name that could ever be called chavvy.

MerryChristmasToYou · 05/03/2023 09:34

@RotundBeagle , as a surname, yes.
As a first name, it's one that has become popular because of a celebrity.
It's not even the first name Dame Bussell was given as a baby.
I think it's along the same likes as Kylie, Rihanna etc

excelledyourself · 05/03/2023 15:34

Nancy/Nancie

Since "Dolce" is an Italian word, yet I have never seen an Italian with the first name "Dolce", I'd knock that or any other type of foreign word that isn't a common first name in that culture or which you have no cultural ties to on the head.
I think that is quite a good boundary to start with in naming one's child.

Yep. Totally agree with this.
