What do you think of these names? I'm not pregnant yet, but planning to be soon.

August
Cedric
Roland
Dimitri - it's French variation of Russian name, but it's honoring my heritage which isn't Russian, but not French either, I like it more than local name
Magnus
Dorian - I think it was name that was popular few years ago where I'm from, inspired by Dorian Grey
Wesley
Sylvan
Clarence - from Narnia novels
Caspian
Gustav - middle name of important local writer
Percy
Frederick
Dylan
Edgar
Edmund
Remy
Maximilian
Roman

be honest, but I don't believe in names being 100% good or 100% bad.

Never seen a list full of such twatty names

category12 · 26/02/2023 07:23

Crikey, it's harsh in here.

The names are quite old-fashioned to me (and feel a bit posh maybe), but that's not necessarily a bad thing. May be due for a revival.

Cedric was a pretty cool guy in Harry Potter.

The Ed starting ones will all be shortened to Ed or Eddie.

Look at some of the responses. Women of such limited cultural experience, which they love to parade, and all they can do is reference Harry Potter, Roland Rat and Percy Pig. All that’s missing on this thread is references back to 1980s Coronation Street.

As a group: pretentious. Sorry. You did ask.
Hard to muster opinion of them individually.
Dylan is on multi-repeat in my family, in last 25 years. So many spellings...

I'm very partial to Edgar. Frederick is nice, too. I don't warm to most of the others, but neither do they make me cringe.

Not ok:
August
Cedric
Roman
Clarence
Wesley - Wes??
Dorian - Dorien Green
Dylan
PercySylvanRemy
Dimitri - ok depending on heritage. Dmitri better. different spellings can be a PITA

OK:
Roland - prefer Rowland

That would be one helluva name. Or password.

@midsomermurderess I think I’m one of those people of 'limited cultural experience' you're referring to. If you read my comments properly, you'll realise that I’m pointing out what other people might think of when they hear the suggested names. I actually like most of them and used one of them!

makes no sense whatsoever
nothing on the list is appealing.

Most are ‘wet’, drippy names (except Dimitri, Dylan, Roman, Maximilian)

Agreed

MamaEm188 · 27/02/2023 13:48

love:
August
Magnus
Maxililian
Dylan

like:
Roman
Frederick

NoDairyNoProblem · 27/02/2023 13:55

Magnus - makes me think of Motherland.
Dorian - a bit drippy.
Wesley - Ned/chav like.
Sylvan - not great.
Clarence - ageing politician.
Caspian - dreadful.
Gustav - not great.
Percy - ageing politician scandal likely.
Frederick - a good solid name.
Dylan - had its day.
Edgar - have heard worse.
Edmund - have heard worse.
Remy - very Ratatouille.
Maximilian - a good solid name.
Roman - popular amongst Ned’s.

In all honestly I would say the list sounds so pretentious, but I think that’s what you are going for, so perhaps not.
