What do you think of these names? I'm not pregnant yet, but planning to be soon.

August
Cedric
Roland
Dimitri - it's French variation of Russian name, but it's honoring my heritage which isn't Russian, but not French either, I like it more than local name
Magnus
Dorian - I think it was name that was popular few years ago where I'm from, inspired by Dorian Grey
Wesley
Sylvan
Clarence - from Narnia novels
Caspian
Gustav - middle name of important local writer
Percy
Frederick
Dylan
Edgar
Edmund
Remy
Maximilian
Roman

be honest, but I don't believe in names being 100% good or 100% bad.

August - Reminds me of Augustus Gloop.
Cedric - A bit too pretty.
Roland - Ok, but relatively dull.
Dimitri - Love this. It was on my shortlist!
Magnus - Not so keen. I would be concerned he would be called "Mag" or "Maggie".
Dorian - Quite like this!
Wesley - Love this!
Sylvan - Really dislike.
Clarence - Nice, but too pretty like Cedric.
Caspian - Really nice.
Gustav - Not keen.
Frederick - It's ok, but a bit posh for my taste.
Dylan - Dylan was the naughty boy at school in the early 2000s.
Edgar - Allen Poe.
Edmund - Not keen.
Remy - Prefer this on a girl.
Maximilian - Nice, but would absolutely get shortened to Max.
Roman - Everyone's name is Roman these days.

hay5689 · 25/02/2023 18:38

Love Dimitri, my favourite on the list.

Anoisagusaris · 25/02/2023 18:38

Most are ‘wet’, drippy names (except Dimitri, Dylan, Roman, Maximilian)

PurBal · 25/02/2023 18:39

I don’t particularly like Roman, Remy, Sylvan, Gustav or Dimitri. Also the only child I know who was called Dylan in the last 10 years was a girl. Otherwise I don’t have strong feeling about them. I suppose my favourite would be Caspian or August.

midsomermurderess · 25/02/2023 18:41

I like August, Cedric, Roland and Gustav. They sound a bit grandly Germanic/Scandinavian, but that’s ok.

itssquidstella · 25/02/2023 18:46

Answering from an English perspective (but with Scandinavian heritage):

August - I love this name, would have had it on the list if DH agreed.
Cedric - also a fab name but I think a lot of English people would call it 'wet' (I disagree!).
Roland - mediaeval French troubadour. A lot of English people will think 'rat'. I know one in his 30s which surprised me when I met him, but it's grown on me. Ro is a good, solid nickname.
Dimitri - not keen if you're not Russian.
Magnus - DS's name so I’m obviously biased, but I think it's great!
Dorian - more likely to make people think of Dorian from Birds of a Feather, unfortunately. Like Vivian, one of those initially male names that is generally perceived as a girls' name now.
Wesley - to me, this is very American or very true-hard 80s. Not keen.
Sylvan - unusual, I really like it.
Clarence - again, likely to be perceived as a bit wet. Mind you, Laurence is becoming more popular and Clarence has a similar vibe so I can see it following suit.
Caspian - I know one and like it, especially because Cas(s) is a great nickname. Most people will think of C.S.Lewis if that matters to you.
Gustav - eh, it's fine. Feels more definitively European than some of your other choices.
Percy - becoming more popular. I'd have Percival rather than Percy on the birth certificate. Also has a mediaeval troubadour vibe.
Frederick - lovely, classic, very popular which would put me off but it's a really nice name.
Dylan - I’m not keen. Feels less classy than some of your other choices, and is also very popular.
Edgar - great but will end up as Ed/Eddie so you don't necessarily get the benefit of its being Edgar rather than Edward.
Edmund - as above.
Remy - classic French name. Not for me but it's fine.
Maximilian - boring. Max. I know seventy billion.
Roman - it's okay. I do like Ro as a nickname but actually, I probably prefer Roland if that's the nickname you want.

What about Clement or Lucien?

bellarosabella · 25/02/2023 18:49

These are the good ones, in my opinion:

Maximilian (but just Max is better)
Rémy (spelled the correct French way)
Edmund
Caspian
Percy
Dylan (but might be dated soon)

These are the bad ones, in my opinion:

Roman (Polanski, just terrible)
Dorian (sorry, but did you read the novel? He's not a good character!)

The others are okay.

ourflagmeansdeath · 26/02/2023 00:17

August - LOVE August, such a pretty boys name
Cedric - Harry Potter, but it's great
Roland - Quite like it! Prefer to Ronald.
Dimitri - Not too bad I think
Magnus - This is my guilty pleasure name, really do like it.
Dorian - LOVE it and Dorian Gray is a fab book!
Wesley - Dislike "ley" names
Sylvan - Really lovely masculine version of Sylvie!
Clarence - Bit old man but it's alright
Caspian - LOVE this, Narnia! Super good.
Gustav - Not for me
Percy - This is just a bit of a whiny name for me.
Frederick - Like, Freddie's lovely too
Dylan -LOVE, you can't go wrong
Edgar - Edgar Allen Poe - it's nice!
Edmund - Fine, you can't go wrong
Remy - Seems more feminine
Maximilian - Love Max, hate all the full forms
Roman - Quite like this!

Favourites are August, Magnus, Dorian, Caspian and Dylan.

Meandfour · 26/02/2023 00:26

Overall, a bit shit. Roman is ok.

NosieRosie · 26/02/2023 00:31

They are awful names! (You did ask for opinions OP).

Roman is ok (ish) … I guess.. If I was pressed to pick one 🤷🏻‍♀️

waltzingparrot · 26/02/2023 00:35

Love Edmund
Dislike Roman
Percy oink oink

Luredbyapomegranate · 26/02/2023 00:40

August - having a moment, prefer Augustus

Cedric - quite sweet in an Edwardian sort of way

Roland - not great

Dimitri - I thought it was Greek?! Anyway, ok.

Magnus - ok, quite fashionable

Dorian - It sounds too much like Doreen. Darius or Dashiell are better

Wesley - don’t be silly

Sylvan - it sounds like an obscure metal, and also too much like Sylvie, so no

Clarence - NO. Behave.

Caspian - Having a moment. Prefer Cassian

Gustav - no, it’s like the Slavic equivalent of Nigel,

Percy - DON’T BE SILLY.

Frederick - fine, but done to death.

Dylan - OK

Edgar - OK

Edmund - OK

Remy - a 60 year old French bloke

Maximilian - nice

Roman - meh and done to death

glitterfarts · 26/02/2023 00:44

They are not very masculine names. A bit old fashioned and dull. I'm assuming you aren't British and nor am I but most of these are not good.

August - ok
Cedric - hideous
Roland - not a fan
Dimitri - not a fan
Magnus - hideous
Dorian - hideous
Sylvan - hideous
Clarence - girly
Gustav - sounds like a rat name
Percy - pig.
Frederick - not good
Dylan - girls name
Edgar - not good
Edmund - poor trying to sound posh
Remy - girls name
Maximilian - ok
Roman - ok

afinishedkiss · 26/02/2023 00:47

Dire.

WinterMusings · 26/02/2023 00:50

Sorry, I hate all of them you'd probably hate a list I made, 🤷🏻‍♀️

if forced to choose one it would be max....

just so I could use the max bit .

my initial thought was 'thank fuck we're not married. He'd be 15 befire we agreed on a name 🤣😂😊

Pieceofpurplesky · 26/02/2023 00:52

August - meh
Cedric - old man name. Or wizard that dies
Roland - rat
Dimitri - no
Magnus - like it
Dorian - no. Have you read the book?
Wesley meh
Sylvan - no
Clarence - no, unless you are naming a 90 year old
Gustav - no
Percy - love it
Frederick - meh
Dylan - like it but lots around
Edgar - no
Edmund - no
Remy - love it
Maximilian - ok but Max is pretty common
Roman - lots about at the moment

LadyJ2023 · 26/02/2023 01:23

Awful awful

wandawaves · 26/02/2023 01:37

August- ok.
Cedric- nope.
Roland- Stephen King's main character. Also musical instruments. Not really a 'name' IMO.
Dimitri- I would expect him to be Greek. Or Russian.
Magnus- pretentious. Awful.
Dorian- sounds like a girl's name.
Wesley- God no.
Sylvan- doesn't sound like a name to me.
Clarence- God no.
Caspian- sooo pretentious.
Gustav- LOL no.
Percy- No!
Frederick- old man.
Dylan- like.
Edgar- old man. And a little pretentious.
Edmund- very pretentious.
Remy- I know a girl Remy, so I always think of it as a girl's name. I don't like it for either sex.
Maximilian- awful awful. So pretentious.
Roman- meh.

So basically, August is nice. Dylan is nice.

Spongeboob · 26/02/2023 02:09

Not keen on any, sorry OP. What if you had a girl?

brightare · 26/02/2023 02:15

How is Dimitri a French variation of a Russian name? It's a lovely name but just insteresded really x. Xx

Threee · 26/02/2023 02:20

Like demitri and caspian

Threee · 26/02/2023 02:23

Also Romy

DaisyCornflowerBlue · 26/02/2023 05:17

Love Magnus. Very strong name.

The others are a bit too old-fashioned for my taste. Or drippy.

TellSomeoneElse · 26/02/2023 05:47

Honestly, I think the vast majority of those names are too try hard and a bit wet sounding. I don’t hate Wesley or Frederick and Roman is okay, but the rest… old men (not in a cool way) or cartoon pigs (Percy!) or rats (Roland and Remy!)

hallodarknessmyoldfriend · 26/02/2023 05:53

I don't love any of these, but would choose Magnus from your list.

Isn't Dimitri Greek?
