What are your thoughts on Fleur for a girls name?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

yeah, it sounds like an exclamation of dislike for me too. like urgh and bleurgh.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 24/02/2023 20:41

I tend to think French names lose most of their charm when said by someone who doesn't have a French accent.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 24/02/2023 20:42

It’s the kind of name I should like and I want to but, as others have said, it sounds like ‘bleugh’ to me and seems somehow unfinished.

Me too

Posyapocalypse · 24/02/2023 21:32

I’m with the majority in that I don’t like how it sounds when pronounced in the UK - sounds like bleugh, urgh. I do like Flora or Florence (Florrie),

pinkpanther84 · 24/02/2023 21:35

My daughter is called Fleur so I am biased, but I think it's a beautiful name. Works for a baby, child and adult

shoopshoopdedoo · 25/02/2023 01:13

Lovely meaning, but agree with others that I don’t think it has a nice sound when spoken (or at least not in my accent!)

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/02/2023 01:15

It always makes me think of someone being sick, sorry to be so blunt.

Flora is nice though.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 25/02/2023 01:19

Very pretty name , suits an adult too .

Seaitoverthere · 25/02/2023 02:18

I like it and named a pet it but for some reason found it hard to say so gave up and she became Flo.

Lucienandjean · 25/02/2023 02:30

It's a pretty name but I associate it with the character in The Forsyth Saga, and I think that would put me off it.

FayCarew · 25/02/2023 06:51

It was first used as a name in The Forsyte Saga.

WombatsAndGumTrees · 25/02/2023 07:05

It's a perfectly good and well known name.

WildCherryBlossom · 25/02/2023 09:55

Flora is a prettier sound

louderthan · 25/02/2023 23:21

Fleur is beautiful and so is Flora.

SummaLuvin · 26/02/2023 09:06

I really like it, but my sister casually said it was like Cilla Black saying 'flare', and now I have such a strong association that I couldn't possibly use it.

daisypond · 26/02/2023 09:12

In theory I should like it. In reality I don’t. I think Flora is much better and more useable.

I agree. It doesn't sound nice in my accent either.

peaceinourtime · 01/03/2023 21:47

I've known one from school. To me the name sounds like a feminine hygiene brand.

Reddahlias · 02/03/2023 06:22

It's so awful in an English accent!

Fleur only sounds nice when pronounced in French!

LuckyThatMyBreastsAreSmallAndHumble · 02/03/2023 07:00

Honestly? Hate the sound. Sounds like you are going to be sick.

LuckyThatMyBreastsAreSmallAndHumble · 02/03/2023 07:01

Flora is much nicer.

MamOfFive · 02/03/2023 07:27

It's my middle name, you have to say it with a French accent otherwise it sounds weird.

pilates · 02/03/2023 07:32

I don’t like it, sounds like bleurgh

SunnieShine · 02/03/2023 07:36

I love it. My next girl cat will be a Fleur.
