Like the beer?

I have a traditional but rare name from the uk that people still can't say or spell so go for it if you want.

Same (although less rare these days) and yet it’s suggested on pretty much every girl’s name thread.

Topseyt123 · 09/02/2023 18:02

I wouldn't give my child a name that they would forever be having to explain and spell. Why lumber them with that?

So it's a no from me. Not my cup of tea at all.

"Why parents curse their child with a name they will spend their whole life having to spell for people, and still having it misspelled, baffles me."

That is literally every name ever

It's really not. Apart from when we travel to non English speaking places both my sons never need to spell their names.

Unless parent make a daft letter change for the sake of it, those are examples of names which have an unambiguous spelling. Some of the names on your example list are just odd: Zooey?

itsnote · 09/02/2023 18:16

Literally nobody is picking the right spelling for poor little khafree though are they? Ridiculous and cruel.

itsnote · 09/02/2023 18:17

"Zooey?" Indeed and Hanah 🤣

JanusTheFirst · 09/02/2023 18:18

Please don't do this to a poor child. A life time of "What?" and having to explain and spell it.

On another forum a woman called her son Ptolemy, Tolly for short. It wasn't from her culture or anything though, she just liked the name. I think his twin was Lewis or something like that, just really ordinary. He'll he a teenager now poor kid.

Spanielsarepainless · 09/02/2023 18:24

Ugly and ghastly.

Cotswoldmama · 09/02/2023 18:29

The thing is those names you listed might have alternative spellings but everyone immediately knows how to pronounce them.

4thonthe4th · 09/02/2023 18:34

It’s awful.

MissMarplesbag · 09/02/2023 18:36

It's very close to the Arabic word for unbeliever, kafir, which doesn't have many positive implications. I really wouldn't, there's so many more meaningful names to choose from.

Theresacatonmylap · 09/02/2023 18:37

It’s a name you’re choosing for yourself, not your child. And he’ll be the one who has to live with it.

littleburn · 09/02/2023 18:37

Is it pronounced like the surname McCaffrey? But without the Mc obviously!

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 09/02/2023 18:40

It's awful sorry

EyesOnThePies · 09/02/2023 18:47

I worked with a woman called Khefri. No issues with pronunciation.

itsnote · 09/02/2023 18:48

"Deschanel ..."

Her parents are famous 😂 they can get away with it

banannabreadforme · 09/02/2023 18:50

If you really like it that's great but... sorry no. Its difficult to say and spell and will inconvenience your child. Perhaps their middle name?

wishingitwasfriday · 09/02/2023 18:50

I'm always intrigued to know what the parents names are in these situations. It always seems to be people who've had 'normal' names that are easy to pronounce who suddenly decide they want to name their child something no one has heard of.

This was my first thought too.

evemillbank · 09/02/2023 19:05

I think a lot of people would think you are saying Cathy. Which isn't great for a boy.

unsync · 09/02/2023 19:10

I thought it was a 'modern' version of Jeffrey. Every day's a school day.
