Ann-ya. I've only heard it said that way.

PauliesWalnuts · 03/02/2023 19:51

I previously worked with an Anya who pronounced her name Ann-ya. But, she had a boss from Belfast who pronounced it On-ya. I think she pronounced it the Gaelic way - which is spelt Áine I think.

DuchessOfSausage · 03/02/2023 19:53

@PauliesWalnuts , Aine is a different name and it is Gaeilge.

VariationsonaTheme · 03/02/2023 19:58

Ann-ya

mathanxiety · 03/02/2023 20:01

Ann-ya.

Not keen, I have to say.

ofwarren · 03/02/2023 20:06

Ann ya

mrsfennel · 03/02/2023 20:08

@EdwardianDream I know a lovely Anja as well. I used to work with someone who pronounced Ahn-ya. Not sure how she spelt it.

JenniferBarkley · 03/02/2023 20:13

I would say Ann-ya but have heard it as On-ya in the US and I think from people with Russian (?) backgrounds so would happily be corrected to that. I'd see it as being like Esme or Helena with multiple correct pronunciations.

CharitySchmarity · 03/02/2023 20:40

I've only ever heard it pronounced as Ann-ya, even in the south. I quite like it, although it wasn't on my shortlist.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 03/02/2023 20:43

Ann-ya but with the stress on the first syllable not the second.

lobeliasb · 03/02/2023 23:16

Ahn-ya/On-ya

Enko · 03/02/2023 23:36

Last one but no I don't like it I knew 2 who were both awful (grew up in Scandinavia where it was fairly common where I grew up)

UsingChangeofName · 03/02/2023 23:56

Ann-ya , with more emphasis on the "Ann" part.

It is nice for people who have mixed heritage, or Scandinavians / Germans etc who will be living in English speaking countires.

Mydogatemypurse · 03/02/2023 23:57

Anne ya

TrashyPanda · 04/02/2023 00:02

Ann ya

TimeToFlyNow · 04/02/2023 00:05

Arn ya I really like it, like the Ann ya pronunciation too though.

hayley013 · 04/02/2023 08:04

Ann-ya, Ahhh-ya would be aíne with the accent on the I

turnipash · 04/02/2023 08:05

It's definitely An-ya

If you live in south london it'll be an-yaaaarrrrt

Whydoitry · 04/02/2023 08:35

Only ever heard Ann-ya.
The Arn-ya spelling is nothing to do with Frozen. Her name is Anna pronounced Are-na.

I don't mind it. I prefer Anna though.

Edthehorse · 04/02/2023 08:43

@ReadtheReviews the frumpy one in Buffy? Anya was definitely not frumpy! Do you mean Tara?

*misses point of thread

inquisitorgeneral · 04/02/2023 10:54

In my community, I've only heard ANN-ya. I'm pretty sure that's correct in Russian (unless you're American and your "Ann" sounds more like "Enn").
forvo.com/search/%D0%90%D0%BD%D1%8F/

Awn-ya is more likely to be the Irish name Áine.

inquisitorgeneral · 04/02/2023 11:01

Posting again because I can't edit: It really depends on how you pronounce yours As. The Russian A in the audio examples sounds almost exactly the way I would pronounce the A sounds in my Irish accent. Some accents give A more of a nasal "eh" quality which isn't the same sound.

FluffyFlower · 04/02/2023 12:00

Anya is a short for Anna in Russian, and yes, It is pronounced as Ahn-ya (Not Eh-nya). Similar to Anja in German/Scandinavia

Teeshirt · 04/02/2023 12:02

Russian Anya is more like Ahn-ya.

bellarosabella · 04/02/2023 19:04

I would also say that in Russian it's ahn-ya.

By ann-ya I meant like in Ann, Anne, Annie.
