Only ever heard it pronounced as an ya

EdwardianDream · 03/02/2023 17:53

Ann-yuh

I like it, I know a wonderful Anja so only has good connotations for me 😊

honeypancake · 03/02/2023 17:53

In Europe / Germany / Russia etc the name would be pronounced as Ahn-ya, so the first one. In the US, An-ya.

Twoinapod · 03/02/2023 17:59

Ahn-ya

Awn-ya would be Aine the Irish name.

I love Ahn-ya. An-ya sounds like people are just butchering a beautiful name.

TheyWentToSeaInASieve · 03/02/2023 18:08

In some countries, it's short for Anastasia or Anna. Worth considering,

losingit31 · 03/02/2023 18:10

Anya = ann ya
Aine = on ya

Choconut · 03/02/2023 18:20

Ann-yuh - I love it.

WeCome1 · 03/02/2023 18:24

Ann yuh and I really like it.

momtoboys · 03/02/2023 18:24

1st pronunciation. Not a fan.

cunderthunt1 · 03/02/2023 18:25

Ann-ya

I like it

Teeshirt · 03/02/2023 18:26

Ann-ya. It’s a nice name. I know a couple.

CornishGem1975 · 03/02/2023 18:26

I say An-ya because I knew one growing up and that's how she pronounced it (her family were German if that makes a difference) but my friend's daughter has this name and prounounces it Arrrrrn-ya which makes her sound a bit pretentious if I am honest!

CornishGem1975 · 03/02/2023 18:27

God that was shocking - I obviously mean 'pronounces' 😂

blisstwins · 03/02/2023 18:29

I am American and say Ahn-yah.

Lulu1919 · 03/02/2023 18:31

Ann ya

Fundays12 · 03/02/2023 18:36

It's pronounced Ahn-ya normally and I love it. It's not common like Ella, Isla, Olivia etc and simple. I have only ever met one Anya who is lovely.

HerbalTeaAndCake · 03/02/2023 18:44

Ann ya

AngelDelightUK · 03/02/2023 18:47

I’ve known one who pronounced it Arn-ya. I love it pronounced like that but I don’t like An-ya

I remember being at school with two girls called Tanya. One was Tarn-ya and one was Tan-ya. So guessing it’s on a similar veil to that.

Toomanywaterwipes · 03/02/2023 18:52

losingit31 · 03/02/2023 18:10

Anya = ann ya
Aine = on ya

Áine is Awn-ya where I am in Ireland. I don't know anyone xalled Anya so I don't know how

Toomanywaterwipes · 03/02/2023 18:53

to say that

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/02/2023 18:55

an-ya, which is standard in the UK I think.

I don’t particularly like it

Odile13 · 03/02/2023 18:58

I’ve heard it the first way or third way. I would go with the third way. I really like it.

Riverlee · 03/02/2023 19:04

Ann - Ya

okay name

TraumaQueenMama · 03/02/2023 19:20

ahn-ya russian/hindu
,Awn-ya Irish (spelt Aine)
ann-ya Anglicised version

I personally think the Russian and Irish versions are beautiful and it loses something in the Anglicised version.

But I know people like to change names to familar sounds.

The meaning is different depending on which version you have..Aine a completely different name.
Anya in Hindu/Russian relates to rebirth and inexhaustible
Anya a version of Anne which means Grace.

And Anya in Buffy was NOT the frumpy one. She was the very thin brunette/blonde one. The frumpy one was Tara or Willow (but only by comparison with Sarah Michelle Gellar, who makes anyone she stands next to look like a potato!

Judgyjudgy · 03/02/2023 19:27

Ahn-ya. Love it
