Micah pronunciation

We have a 8 month old called Micah, we love not too popular names but never wanted to give our child a name with ambiguous pronunciation.

70% of health professionals I have come into contact with so far have mispronounced his name “Me-kah” instead of “My-kah”.

Will he will have to correct people his whole life and if so should we consider changing it before he gets any older?

Lovely name!

If it helps there is a Character in the L Word called Micah so it is unlikely to be mispronounced by any lesbians.

Mydogatemypurse · 02/02/2023 22:13

Me kah

StillWantingADog · 02/02/2023 22:13

My-kah
don’t change it though! I have an awkward name that nobody can pronounce. It’s annoying but not the end of the world at all.

TwinsAndTiramisu · 02/02/2023 22:14

Meesha.

Your ds is going to be correcting people for the rest of his life, sorry OP.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 02/02/2023 22:15

I've only heard it pronounced me-kah.

Highfivemum · 02/02/2023 22:15

We have three in my DD class and all said correctly. I wouldn’t worry

SheWoreYellow · 02/02/2023 22:15

I would have presumed it was a variant of Mika, and so Me kah I’m afraid.

CornishGem1975 · 02/02/2023 22:16

Mee-sha

I would have assumed "My-cha" as in the prophet, and of course as in the first part of Micha-el (a longer version of the name although the spelling has altered in English!)

It is the prophet my- ka. It definitely isnt a ch sound

carpool · 02/02/2023 22:18

My DD has one of those names - when she was a child people who saw it written would mispronounce it and those who heard it would misspell it. It has gradually become more common though so not often a problem now. Micah is a good name don't change it.

The perils of phonetics! I meant "ch" as in Scottish "loch" but failed to say that. Sorry.

I actually used to think it was pronounced Me Sha.. Blush

Me too. I've thought that since Micah Paris first burst onto the music scene!

thinkfast · 02/02/2023 22:32

I think either pronunciation is correct OP.

As someone with an unusual name (which I love), please be aware your son will spend the rest of his life confirming its spelling and pronunciation. It's not the end of the world.

rattlinbog · 02/02/2023 22:32

My-ka definitely.

ShittyPeasantsFromHampshire · 02/02/2023 22:32

If there's a footballing Micah that's good news. That's the easiest way for an unusual name to filter through to the masses.

msssm · 02/02/2023 22:35

I've always thought Meesha, and I love it.

underneaththeash · 02/02/2023 22:40

I would pronounce it Mi-can too.

just spell it as you want it prounouced! X

UnfinishedBusiness · 02/02/2023 22:43

Kay4546 · 02/02/2023 21:53

🙁 Yes doesn’t fill me with hope! It’s funny because if you think of how we pronounce “micro” in English this is where you get the mi (my) sound from in Micah but for some reason people read it differently - maybe the singer has confused things😣

But equally, the mi in Michelle is not pronounced “my”, but more of a “mee”, so someone not familiar with the name has a 50/50 chance of guessing the correct pronunciation I suppose.

JRsTornadoOfLove · 02/02/2023 22:47

twanmever · 02/02/2023 22:22

Me too. I've thought that since Micah Paris first burst onto the music scene!

She is Mica Paris, not Micah

I have a Micah (My - Kar) and he has had the whole lot.

Meesha
Meecha
My char
Mee ka

Oh well, that's the perils of an unusual name!

Cornelious2011 · 02/02/2023 22:48

My-Ka

Shoogly · 02/02/2023 22:50

Me Ka in the same way I pronounce Mia Me-ah not my-ah. Nice name either way.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 02/02/2023 22:51

My-kah. Same as Micah Richards.

TheFireflies · 02/02/2023 22:52

My-kah, since I watched Heroes

RovenderKitt · 02/02/2023 22:54

Mee-Kah like the noughties footballer Micah Richards.

MyCreation · 02/02/2023 22:54

I would say MyKuh, but I know a girl Mica who’s is pronounced Meekah.
