Hey

DH and I are expecting our don soon, he loves the name Idris and if the name didn't automatically make people mention an actor I would it too, what's your opinion and first reactions to the name?

I do think of the actor but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. It’s a name in own right anyway so if you like it go for it.

HoldingTheDoor · 29/01/2023 14:10

I'm not a fan. It has an unattractive sound.

MatildaJayne · 29/01/2023 15:11

It’s a Welsh name to me. I had no idea it was also a Muslim name. I always thought Idris Elba must have a Welsh background. Blush

My first thoughts are Idris the dragon in Ivor the Engine and Cader Idris in Gwynedd, then Idris Elba who was actually Idrissa (so not at all Welsh 😂)

mummaxi · 29/01/2023 16:40

Thanks all! So nice to see lots of different opinions .

It is also an African name and history there which is one of the many reasons why we like it.

I think we are pretty set on it and it's good to hear a wide consensus of positivity as well as the negative.

I have always loved a slightly unusual/not overly popular name that is still a strong "proper" name if you know what I mean and not wishy washy name that's trying to hard to be trendy.

Thanks again everyone x

How is the Welsh version pronounced?

beAsensible1 · 29/01/2023 21:13

How is the Welsh version pronounced?

Id (as in Id, ego etc) Riss.

LaLuz7 · 29/01/2023 21:17

I like it. And that's coming from someone who is oddly particular and judgemental about baby names 🙃

AppleDragon · 29/01/2023 21:23

I have an Idris (welsh family living in England) . Only had positive comments, no pronunciation issues and love the islamic connection.

Go for it!

h78 · 29/01/2023 21:31

The islamic version is associated with a prophet who had that name. It's also my nephew's name, I love it.

TitInATrance · 29/01/2023 09:12

Like it for a Welsh child, otherwise I’d wonder why you chose it.

Idris is not just a welsh name. It's also an Arabic name and and an African name.

Last I checked Idris Elba isn't Welsh....

Festivfrenzy · 29/01/2023 21:56

Love it! Elba, Welsh, Muslim, African, giant - all fabulous connotations to have with a name. Great choice!

Newlifestartingatlast · 29/01/2023 22:01

YfenniChristie · 29/01/2023 04:28

I love it. Lovely Welsh name.

Welsh? Is it
?
goggle says it’s arabic! And is the name of Islamic prophet
i was about to post and say it an unusual choice if no Muslim or Arabic connections

zurala · 29/01/2023 22:01

It makes me think of old men because they isn't person I knew called it was a very old Welsh man. I don't like it much for a baby.

fairypeasant · 29/01/2023 22:04

Love it.

coverp · 29/01/2023 22:07

The Idris I know is wonderful. Gets shortened to Iddy. He is Muslim and I haven't heard it before outside of that context (but I'm far away from Wales!)

sanityisamyth · 29/01/2023 22:08

Never heard of it before I moved to Cardiff and only know 1 here. It's nice.

hellsbells99 · 29/01/2023 22:44

I have a relative called Idris - he is Welsh

CaffiSaliMali · 30/01/2023 09:34

I'm half Welsh so my first thought is that it's a lovely Welsh name.

My second thought is Idris Elba, not a bad association.

My third thought is that it's a lovely Arabic name.

Idris is not just a welsh name. It's also an Arabic name and and an African name.

Last I checked Idris Elba isn't Welsh....

My opinions and first reactions would be above though, prompted by good memories of Cadair Idris in Snowdonia.

Offleyhoo · 30/01/2023 09:41

Good name and none of the associations are offputting at all, go for it!

mumonherphone · 30/01/2023 11:52

I only know it because of Idris Elba but that's not a bad thing.

RuthW · 30/01/2023 12:16

Nice

wagamamar · 30/01/2023 12:17

It's ok. I personally don't know anyone called it.

My thought exactly!

The actor is my first association. I'd not heard of the name before. I'm old enough to remember Ivor the Engine, but don't remember any of the characters.

I like the name and I think Idris Elba is a positive connection.
