Hey

DH and I are expecting our don soon, he loves the name Idris and if the name didn't automatically make people mention an actor I would it too, what's your opinion and first reactions to the name?

OP posts:

I love it, first thought was Idris the dragon.

winterpastasalad · 29/01/2023 10:05

I'd assume you are Muslim. It's the Arabic version of Enoch so a name that religious Muslims use. Its pronounced Idrees.

cluelesspotato · 29/01/2023 10:52

It's not a Welsh name though, it's an Islamic name.
As someone who's been held back by my name and who has first hand experience of and know loved ones who have been discriminated against for bearing Islamic first names (job opportunities, renting/ buying a house, building social ties, dating a wider pool etc), I would strongly advise you think carefully of the socioeconomic implications of this for your child and their future.
Except they are visibly White or grow up to be exceptional at what they do, then they will get away with being prejudged.
Unpopular but hard truth - just thought to highlight this as it's something people shy away from talking about openly.

cluelesspotato · 29/01/2023 10:54
  • they may not get away from being prejudged.
WhoopItUp · 29/01/2023 10:56

It’s also a Muslim name

The dragon in the Ivor The Engine children's series from the 70s.
But then, I'm old.

My favourite programme growing up !
It's a beautiful Welsh name and I think it's a warm and welcoming name if that makes any sense.

Spanielsarepainless · 29/01/2023 10:57

I think of Cader Idris , which is definitely Welsh and not Islamic. I love it.

BertieBotts · 29/01/2023 10:57

It was my top choice but DH wasn't keen.

BertieBotts · 29/01/2023 10:59

My grandma was Welsh and it's the Welsh connection for me.

Sleepthief · 29/01/2023 11:01

It is a Welsh name, though. And an Islamic one. They are unconnected

It is a lovely name and I don't think any associations with Idris Elba are a bad thing!

Harebrain · 29/01/2023 11:04

It makes me think of Ginger Beer! It’s a brand of soft drink.

TheMoonHangsOverIdlewild · 29/01/2023 11:08

@cluelesspotato
Sorry it's not letting me quote your post.
Nobody on here is shying away from it because I'm guessing none of us knew it is mentioned in the Quoran. It would probably only be Muslims that would know that and then they obviously wouldn't be discriminating.
It's an extremely ancient Welsh name/word used in folklore.

TheMoonHangsOverIdlewild · 29/01/2023 11:13

*Quran

Howaboutthisonehenry · 29/01/2023 11:19

There might be a connection between the Welsh and Muslim name.

In Welsh and Arab folklore, Idris was a giant who was also an astronomer. Could be coincidence, or some ancient myth that’s survived in wales and Middle East!

it’s a great name

I didn't realise it's a Welsh name too, and that's great to hear!
I don't think anyone is shying away from it on here, which is nice. There's been lovely responses and favour for it.
It's a beautiful name and in an ideal world, that's what it ought to be. I just wanted to give OP a different perspective.
I meant that the power and demerits of a name is something people don't often consider/ talk about openly.

TheMoonHangsOverIdlewild · 29/01/2023 12:11

@cluelesspotato
I hated my name growing up being a complete tomboy and it being a very traditional English name you would see in a Jane Austin novel.
I wonder what we'd all be called if we got to pick our name as a child and have to keep it for life ? 😂
I know what you mean though, it'd be hard to imagine a prime minister called "Trixie" or "Rocky"

BertieBotts · 29/01/2023 13:19

Well there is that American politician called Mitt! 🥊

Gwenhwyfar · 29/01/2023 13:26

"Nobody on here is shying away from it because I'm guessing none of us knew it is mentioned in the Quoran."

I didn't know it as mentioned in the Quran, but I knew it was an Arab name as well as a Welsh one so I would potentially make the link with Islam.

Cadair (or Cader) Idris, the mountain, means the chair of Idris the giant.

MissMarplesbag · 29/01/2023 13:28

It's a lovely Arabic name, very popular in the Islamic community.

kerosene20 · 29/01/2023 13:28

It’s lovely,
I only know it as a muslim Name.

TamzinGrey · 29/01/2023 13:51

I love the name Idris which has been handed down in my Welsh family for generations. My father's name was Idris, and it is my brother's middle name. We had no idea that it was also an Islamic name.
The name Idris goes back to ancient times in Wales. The Welsh king Idris Gawr was born in the year 560. The mountain Cadair Idris is said to have been named after him.

Shoogly · 29/01/2023 13:53

It makes me think of Idris Elba which is no bad thing at all...

Devonchills · 29/01/2023 13:55

A good strong Welsh name, I love it. Has been used as a middle name in my family for generations.

motleymop · 29/01/2023 13:55

Ginger beer is the first thing I think of.
Then the actor.
