Matilda or Margot

Which do you prefer? Middle name will likely be Jean.

Matilda Jean
Margot Jean

only thing putting me off Matilda is that I don’t like Tilly as a nickname. Not sure is Margot Jean sounds right together though.

Thank you!!

How about Tilda or Mat as a NN? To be honest though, you don't really have any control over what their friends call them once they get to school.

Twoinapod · 26/01/2023 21:30

I know one Tilly, one Tilda and one Matty. You don’t have to shorten it at all, although they may get one at school anyway.

matilda is much nicer than Margot and flows better with Jean

LaLuz7 · 26/01/2023 21:32

Matilda sounds much nicer

Margot is just a letter away from maggot

Rauha · 26/01/2023 21:33

Margot

17caterpillars1mouse · 26/01/2023 21:36

I prefer Margot, though also prefer the Margeaux spelling as the one I know spells it that way and I like longer names.

I used to like Matilda but it's so overused in my area now (midlands) it's dull as dishwater

dmb91 · 26/01/2023 21:39

Matilda

Thepossibility · 26/01/2023 21:42

I like both. Margot is a bit too popular for me ATM though.
I love Matty at a nn for Matilda.

In French that would be pronounced Marge-O

Could it be Margaux?

Yep. Margeaux is most definitely pronounced differently from Margot/Margaux. There's a jo sound in there.

MajorCarolDanvers · 26/01/2023 21:50

Margot

BinkyBuntyFintyCunty · 26/01/2023 21:52

Margot is beautiful. What about Margot Jeannie?

Bubblemachiene · 26/01/2023 21:53

Definitely matilda, doesn't have to have I nick name. I don't get why everyone mentions nick names.
I really dislike margot
Reminds me of an older woman called Margaret, with margy or margo for short

Divebar2021 · 26/01/2023 21:53

Margot is more elegant - Mathilda is fun / cheeky and quite commonly found in my area.

xprincessxjanetx · 26/01/2023 22:01

Matilda is nicer. I agree with a PP, Margot always makes me think of maggot.

Namechange192727171 · 26/01/2023 22:03

Definitely Matilda, not Maggot

cravingmilkshake · 26/01/2023 22:06

We have a matilda, her nickname from everyone is Matti!

She also has a cousin called Margot who's really suits her name too.

Both good in my opinion ☺️

Hoolihan · 26/01/2023 22:07

My niece is Margot and does indeed get called Maggots sometimes (by us!) as well as Marge, Margery, Margaret, Madge, Madgery, Mags and Margs. 😂 I love it!

Matilda is lovely too, possibly about to explode in popularity due to the recent film?

cravingmilkshake · 26/01/2023 22:08

Also just to caveat, maggot never ever crossed our minds for Margot ....

Sashimito · 26/01/2023 22:09

I'm due to have a little boy soon but these were my top 2 girls names. I think I would've gone for Margot.

DramaAlpaca · 26/01/2023 22:09

Matilda is lovely.

Margot just isn't.

Jelly4444 · 26/01/2023 22:09

Matilda is just adorable. You could shorten to Millie.

Margo is a very old French lady not a baby!

kerosene20 · 26/01/2023 22:14

I love Margot but that Billie Faiers just called her baby it, which puts me right off….so Matilda!

LolaSmiles · 26/01/2023 22:15

Both are lovely, though from reading the replies I think I'll forever see the Margot/Maggot link.

sevenbyseven · 26/01/2023 23:04

How about Martha? It's halfway between the two 🙂

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 27/01/2023 01:23

Margot is one of those names that people pick thinking 'oh this is so chic and underused' not realising it's actually exploded in popularity in the past two or three years to the extent that it feels like there are small Margots everywhere you go now.
