Ella or Sofia?

Of these two names, which would you pick?

Neither. I know too many of them already. Sophia is a nicer spelling.

Sophia.

Sorry, neither. They are nice names but there are so many Ella's and Sophia's right now. Either one will likely end up having to qualify their name when they get to school. Imagine if your dd ends up being 'little' Ella, or 'big' Ella, or perhaps has to use her full name every time because the other Ella has the same last initial.
It's like the Sarah of my generation. I know a 'work' Sarah, a 'neighbour' Sarah, a 'big' Sarah and a [sport name] Sarah.

Sophia (spelt like that)

Both pretty names but soooo so popular (which would put me off)

I have a Sofia so I'd say that. The Sofia spelt this way is also less popular

And btw there are no other Sofia's in her class and only one other in her year (5)

Additionally there were four of my name in one class one year in the 80's yet I barely know any now.

The problem is I constantly hear/read about how Ella is really popular and overused yet I only know of 2 Ella's and they're pretty distant from me and both around 10 years old.

Same goes for Sofia (or Sophia but I don't like this spelling), I read about people complaining how popular it is yet I know 1 Sophia who is 2yo and that's it.

Also to clarify, I really love both of these names but I don't want to use a name that's popular so it does put me off - but I do struggle to justify the popularity they supposedly have when I hardly know any. Hope that makes sense.

Sofia but only because I find Ella a bit bland. Both are really popular though which would put me off. Especially if you just used the generic filler middle names of Rose/Grace/May.

Both names are perfectly fine but ubiquitous.

I would probably go with Ella as it would wind me up constantly correcting people: “No, it’s Sophia with a F.” I prefer Sophie personally.

I would personally pick Ella (it was on our shortlist!) but both are lovely names.

I know a few Ella’s (1 teen and 2 adults) but haven’t come across any baby Ella’s yet (although my LO is very small and so not at school or nursary yet!) I don’t think Ella itself is overly popular atm but there do seem to be lots of El names around or names that can be shortened to El/ Ella/ Ellie etc. I still think it’s a lovely name and would use it if you like it.

I personally know more Sophia/ Sofia’s (4 under the age of 10 and a few in their 20s-30s). Also a lovely name!

How about something like Gabriella or Arabella and you can use Ella (or Bella) as a nn? Less common then.

While you are there, look at names that might be shortened to Ella or Ellie, and Sophie.

My Sofia's middle name is also Rose. This is after my nan though and was always going to be her middle name. Maybe a lot of our generation had Nana Rose's as a lot of her class have this name. Oh well maybe I'm just bland 🙄🤣

Me too ! I have a Sofia I'd say that

Are you around a lot of children? I don't know of any baby Olivias but it's because there are only a few babies I hear about each year yet it's the most popular name. There is more diversity in names so the most common names are less popular than the top names of the past so it is possible to be the only Isla, Olivia, Sophia etc etc but they're still the most popular. If that doesn't bother you though then go for whichever one you like.

Personally I like Sophia best out of those two.
