Names you've stopped yourself from using

When pregnant with my son I flirted with the idea of calling him Kerouac after the writer Jack Kerouac. We didn't go with Jack as he has a cousin very close in age with that name.

I stopped myself from calling him Kerouac and stuck with a sensible name which I also love.

I'm pregnant again and still considering Kerouac if it's another boy! My sensible side will win through. Especially as the name would sound daft next to his brother's traditional name.

Which names have you been very tempted to use but stopped yourself?

Atticus

It's just too much for where I live.

SquigglePigs · 25/01/2023 14:17

I love the name Arabella but we already have a very "posh" sounding surname (even thought we aren't) that I thought I was asking for trouble putting them together.

For boys I loved Phoenix but I didn't think we could get away with a non-mainstream name so our short list was more of the Daniel, Matthew spectrum. In the end we had a DD so it didn't matter.

Reminds me of when my mum phoned to suggest we use Jacques for our firstborn. "It's just like Jack, but fancier" she said, whilst I pissed myself laughing.

Funnily enough I'd considered Scout for a girl. I also like Ptolemy but I've seen that's actually gaining popularity!

Nico -loved it but we have zero Italian heritage which I think would’ve been the assumption. Baby has also ended up blonde haired and blue eyed so I don’t think it would’ve suited him at all.
Kit - was actually a front runner until I realised that combined with my nn we would’ve ended up a certain chocolate biscuit 😂

TwoPointFourCatsAndDogs · 25/01/2023 21:24

Dilys

DaisyCornflowerBlue · 25/01/2023 21:28

Genevieve. Lots of nn combos!

But it's the name of DH's ex, so it was out.

Leemoe · 25/01/2023 21:31

Annakin

LesLavandes · 25/01/2023 21:52

Rafferty

Startuplife · 25/01/2023 22:09

Anything beginning with an A which seems to be all the names I love!
Our surname is an S-S double barrel and the initials would be unfortunate.

Aftertheharvest · 25/01/2023 22:17

Also Nico and Genevieve!

PurBal · 25/01/2023 22:20

I love Benedict and Augustine for boys and Caritas for a girl. Never going to happen IRL.

MashedUpPotatoes · 25/01/2023 22:20

I loved Queenie and Bridie when pregnant with dd2 but didn’t think the world was ready yet 😂

WordtoYoMumma · 25/01/2023 22:21

I really wanted to call my son Red. I just love it.

By baby number 3 I had convinced DH of the name Jared - DH said we would shorten to Jed but I thought I would secretly shorten to Red 😂

Baby number 3 was a girl 😂

I still want a baby Red!!

PurBal · 25/01/2023 22:21

With obvious nn: Ben, Augie and Cari

Teenagelament · 25/01/2023 22:25

Isolde

zinch · 25/01/2023 22:29

Sky for a boy 💙

Isolde

I love Isolde! I was v tempted by Iseult.

I really wanted Sadhbh, but we live in Scotland and my dp thought it would be difficult for people.

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 25/01/2023 22:36

I wanted Erasmus and DH wanted Orion. We compromised on something much more ordinary.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 25/01/2023 22:37

Loved serge for a boy, wouldn’t have suited him

Zipadeebooyah · 25/01/2023 22:37

@Snugglemonkey how do you pronounce that?

OP posts:
elgreco · 25/01/2023 22:42

Dubhdaire (pronounced dove dara) means "black oak", Macdara means "son of oak"

WashAsDelicates · 25/01/2023 22:44

Benedict

Dh: Never heard of it. What, like the drink? Sounds pretentious.

20 years later, he loves everything that Benedict Cumberbatch has been in and thinks Benedict is an excellent name.
