Blousie

Came across a child with this name recently. I've never heard of it, and I just thought it sounds like calling your child Skirtsie or Glovesie. But maybe it's a real name that I just haven't heard before. Maybe from another country? Mum seemed perfectly normal and called her Blouse for short! Anyone heard it before or can explain it to me? I absolutely promise I'm not on the wind up.

Like in Bugsy Malone?! Terrible idea!

MerryMarigold · 23/01/2023 15:18

Oh, so at least it is a name. Not seen Bugsy Malone.

OMG. My mum (80+) uses this word as an insult (=overweight/fat; yes my mum has had a lifelong eating disorder but still …!)

CrackerIsland · 23/01/2023 15:18

Reminds me of Bugsy Malone. It’s not for me.

ethelredonagoodday · 23/01/2023 15:18

Yep I was going to say, my only reference point is Blousey Brown in Bugsy Malone!

DramaAlpaca · 23/01/2023 15:19

Yes, Blousey (that spelling) was a character in Bugsy Malone. Horrible name!

AuntieStella · 23/01/2023 15:20

Well the British English meaning of blowsy/blousy would I'm afraid put me right off - sloppy unkempt, coarse, dishevelled, messy

MaireadMcSweeney · 23/01/2023 15:21

Awful!!!

Rosalisa · 23/01/2023 15:23

Don't they also pronounce the "s" sound, so it's an American "blouse" to rhyme with "louse"?

Eh, no.

Abcde19 · 23/01/2023 15:23

Bizarre 🤣

UrsulaPandress · 23/01/2023 15:25

Big Girls Blouse.

BooCrew · 23/01/2023 15:26

"Blousey Brown, singer."

Same here

basically means unattractive

Newusernameaug · 23/01/2023 15:29

I know a lovely Blousie in her mid 30’s, the name really suits her :)

Oh, so at least it is a name. Not seen Bugsy Malone.

Well… other characters include Fizzy, Roxy, Cagey Joe, Knuckles, Dandy Dan, Tallulah, Bangles, Coco, Baby face, and of course Bugsy… so not really known for traditional names 😁

If you’ve not seen Bugsy Malone you really should. It’s brilliant.

That said, all names are made up at some point.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 23/01/2023 15:33

Whyyyy would you call a girl Blousie when the identically sounding 'blowsy' is right there, with a not particularly nice meaning? As I am morphing into my mother it's a word I even use myself from time to time. Usually to describe me!

MrsMitford3 · 23/01/2023 15:35

We (UK) use it as an adjective meaning under par.
Like "I feel a bit blousey today."
means I would be feeling low/meh/blah/bit down in the dumps

Not a nice association at all

My late mother (80+) always said it meant a "woman of loose morals"
😲😲

“The name’s Brown”.
”Sounds like a loaf of bread”.
”Blousey Brown”.
”Sounds like a stale loaf of bread”.

IsadoraQuagmire · 23/01/2023 16:09

Also Blousey, in the film of Bugsy Malone, is a very dreary unattractive character, especially when compared to the gorgeous Tallulah.

Exactly. I always assumed that was why the character was named Blousey. To give connotations of frumpy dreariness.

MerryMarigold · 23/01/2023 17:41

Oh bless her, she's really cute little girl. Hopefully most people won't have heard of it and the association. I'll have to watch Bugsy Malone now! I think if it were a completely 'made up' name, it would be better, it's just because it sounds like the clothes item with an 'ee' on the end. I think they pronounce it with zzzz sound not an ssss.

I actually watched Bugzy Malone for the first time in years yesterday! Such a great film!
Also the only place I've heard the name and don't like it I'm afraid!

Was just about to type that quote until I saw you'd beaten me to it!

It's a dreadful name for a baby, sorry....

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 23/01/2023 17:55

It sounds like 'blowsy' which means unkempt, so would be a no from me.
