Came across a child with this name recently. I've never heard of it, and I just thought it sounds like calling your child Skirtsie or Glovesie. But maybe it's a real name that I just haven't heard before. Maybe from another country? Mum seemed perfectly normal and called her Blouse for short! Anyone heard it before or can explain it to me? I absolutely promise I'm not on the wind up.

We (UK) use it as an adjective meaning under par.
Like "I feel a bit blousey today."
means I would be feeling low/meh/blah/bit down in the dumps

Not a nice association at all

Do we?

Do you mean lousy?

“The name’s Brown”.
”Sounds like a loaf of bread”.
”Blousey Brown”.
”Sounds like a stale loaf of bread”.

Snurk😆

Lousy is a totally different word. To me a blousy woman is a unkempt, looks like a sack of rubbish, with morals to match. Not a very modern word though still a bad name

I've always thought blousey meant working class and a bit over dressed/over made up, but maybe that's because I also know it from Bugsy Malone?

AnnieFarmer · 23/01/2023 19:45

I always loved the name because I really liked the Bugsy Malone character.

The meaning of the word when referring to clothing in my experience is different to PPs. I’ve always understood it to be referring to a garment that’s flouncy and fussy.

Goodness, haven't thought of Bugsy and Co for years, but it's all flooding back!

Love Bugsy, love Blousie...but as a name, no.

Unless it was twins, Bugsy and Blousie BlushGrin

Wow… the lengths some people go to to give their poor kids some bonkers name just because it’s ‘unique’ 🙄
