Imogen or Maeve - Help!
NameStruggles · 22/01/2023 15:10
Hi All,
Would love some help trying to decide between these two girls names (our first daughter is Cora):
Maeve- I know it is getting popular but is it a passing trend name?
Imogen (nn Immie)- We do love this name but is it too bland?!
Thanks!

I find Maeve a bit dull and dreary. But I'm not hugely keen on Imogen either.
I'm no use basically.
ODFOx · 22/01/2023 18:30
They are both gorgeous.
By a nose I'd pick Imogen but nn Mog not Immie.
StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 22/01/2023 18:34
nickname Mog??
Well that would certainly be...memorable.
ShakeYourFeathers · 22/01/2023 18:34
I really like Imogen. It was on the list for what my parents were going to call me.
sixtiesbaby88 · 22/01/2023 18:40
Maeve definitely. I know quite a few Imogens but no Maeves
virginqueen · 22/01/2023 18:45
My daughter is Imogen, so I prefer that. She goes by her full name or Imo.
cptartapp · 22/01/2023 18:49
Lots and lots of Maeves atm, Sounds like it's short for Mavis, Mave. Ugly.
So Imogen.
Mittens1717 · 22/01/2023 18:50
Imogen definitely, such a beautiful name, I'm Irish and Maeve is quite old fashioned here
SunlightThroughTrees · 22/01/2023 20:00
I think both names are lovely but I’d only go for Maeve if you won’t mind people regularly mispronouncing it.
NameStruggles · 22/01/2023 20:21
Thank you so much, really appreciate everyone's thoughts and some good suggestions for nicknames beside Immy (and very good point that we shouldn't be too prescriptive on this anyway)!
I think we will either go Maeve Imogen or Imogen Maeve at this rate, but lovely to see most people like both.
DotDotDotDotDot · 22/01/2023 21:17
I had Maeve and Cora on my girl name list but had a boy in the end. Imogen would have been on there too but doesn’t work with our surname. On balance I’d probably go for Maeve as it sounds lovely with Cora. Either way I don’t think you can go too wrong. Good luck.

Well yes. I already have a Margaret (Meg), so I must like the sound of it!
AnotherNameChangeYes · 23/01/2023 12:55
Maeve because Imogen is just so popular it’s overused.
KirstenBlest · 23/01/2023 14:31
@AnotherNameChangeYes , Imogen isn't particularly overused. Maeve has shot up in popularity out of nowhere, so a lot of parents will think they're using an unusual name only to find that there are loads of them
Fifthtimelucky · 23/01/2023 14:36
I've always hated Maeve, mainly because it reminds me of Mavis which when I was young was a terribly boring old lady name like Doris and Ethel.
I like Imogen though.
wingsofabird · 23/01/2023 14:44
@AnotherNameChangeYes
look at the official graphs- Maeve is about to overtake Imogen in the charts.
Imogen is a classic and has levelled out/ is falling. whereas Maeve is booming.
I really love both names but would pick Imogen

Imogen. I think it used to be posh but not now.
Maeve just reminds me of mauve, it sounds a bit dreary to me.
Or maybe Marianne? I think that’s nicer than either.
HallieHufflepuff · 23/01/2023 22:55
I like Imogen but both names are lovely.
I'm not really sure how to pronounce Maeve without googling it but that's a me issue.
Both names are beautiful and would go really nice with Cora.
