I am 6 months pregnant with my first dd and I really like the name Stacey. My dh likes it too but not quite as much as me. Everyone I've mentioned the name to really don't seem to like it. A few have said it's dated and others haven't really been able to give a reason why they just don't like it. After googling I saw it's hardly used anymore and I thought it was a shame. I thought with women like Stacey Dooley and Stacey Solomon being on tv it may have had a revival but it doesn't look like it has. I know there was the Stacy's mom song but that's old now so I didn't think that would put people off. I was just wondering what other people thought and if they think it's a good name to use or if not if are there any similar names that may be good to use

It's ok as a nn for anastasia but that being your dh's nieces name I think Stacey is a bit too similar anyway. There is Eustacia as well but that makes me think of ears.

ShesThunderstorms · 22/01/2023 09:49

Oh no. It's dated and not in the good way. I think maybe I'm biased as any Stacey I've ever known has been a horrible person. And it would be pronounced "Stacehhhh" where I live, which makes it even worse.

Princesspollyyy · 22/01/2023 09:55

Sorry no. It's just too dated.

Also Stacey Dooley and Stacey Solomon are in their thirties. So shows you that it is a dated name. The Staceys I know are also in their thirties.

cravingtoblerone · 22/01/2023 10:42

I think it's very dated (and not in a good way). Anything like Stacey, Tracey, Lacey etc sounds like it belongs on a 50 year old.

Jacky86 · 22/01/2023 21:44

I love how everyone is saying it’s dated when names like Pearl, Sadie etc are making a comeback. Maybe there’ll be hundreds of Staceys in 50 years. Try not to associate names with timelines. See it as classic rather than dated.

BCxx · 22/01/2023 21:55

I love it 😊

mathanxiety · 22/01/2023 22:01

If there's already an Anastasia in the wider family, I'd consider some other name.

ditherydotty · 22/01/2023 22:11

I don't like it as sounds too much like Tracey which is awful - your child though so you cancel her what you please

jackstini · 22/01/2023 22:33

Love it. It is the name of one of the strongest, most incredible women I know - great name

inquisitorgeneral · 23/01/2023 16:48

I don't think it's awful but I find it a bit dated. I'd expect a Stacey to have been born in the 1980s or 90s, along with Gemma, Lauren and the like. Name fashions supposedly work in one hundred year cycles so theoretically Stacey and other 1980s names won't be back in style until about 2080.

Little kids won't know the song but teenagers probably will.

Bugeyedowl · 23/01/2023 16:55

Not a fan, makes me think of someone loud and gobby like Stacey slater in EE.

ammyy · 23/01/2023 16:56

I think its is much nicer than Tracey, Lacey, Casey etc. I think it has a nice soft sound and even though it is a bit basic and "dated", I think it would be actually quite refreshing to see a little baby called Stacey :) Personnally not my favourite name but I think it is useable and kinda cute :)

dustydewdrop · 23/01/2023 17:02

Stacey is what I wish I’d been called in the 80s instead of what my parents gave me! I do still quite like it

Bowbellsx · 23/01/2023 17:14

Treeeeeeee · 22/01/2023 07:46

It is a dated and chavvy name

Thanks Im not a chav

BearingFalseWitness · 23/01/2023 18:05

I would also use Anastasia and have Stacey as a nickname, but then I like the more unusual classic names. She can also be Stasia.(Stay-sha)

If you love it I would use it. People can be so opinionated, but name fashions constantly come and go and Stacey was big in the 80s/90s so I think she will likely be unique in her year group amongst a glut of Avas Amelias Islas Willows and Siennas.

BearingFalseWitness · 23/01/2023 18:10

Also people on mumsnet can be some of the worst snobs going when it comes to names and yet be slaves to fashion.

It’s a perfectly lovely name, if you like it, use it.

Wallabyone · 23/01/2023 18:19

I always think of it as a nickname for Anastasia-this would give more options as she gets older?

LemonSqueezy0 · 23/01/2023 18:40

If you have an anastasia already, I wouldn't use Stacey anyway. It's too similar, and Anastasia is so much nicer.

I mean, I wouldn't use it anyway, as it does give the impression of being dated and "chavy" for want of a better/nicer word.

All the people called Stacey that I know or know of, are are a certain type, which tied in with the above.. Dooley, slater, Solomon.....

That being said, it's your child. But be prepared for people thinking the above when they first hear the name.

ReeseWitherfork · 23/01/2023 20:12

I don’t understand the Tracy/Sharon/Karen comparisons. Forgive me if I’m wrong but aren’t those all from the 60s/70s? I’d expect women with those names to be 50 odd now? Whereas Stacey feels more 80s/90s to me? Women in their 30s?

I’d put it in the same group as Nicola, Rachel, Sarah, Emma…. And I think those names are all timeless classics. Stacey has a bit more of an era attached to her but not dramatically so.

containsnuts · 11/02/2023 18:10

How about Gracie? Christie? Kirsty? (trying to think of names with similar sounds but in different order)

FadoFado · 11/02/2023 20:26

I think it's a nice friendly sounding name. I know a Stacey who's a museum curator. She's very arty and educated and lovely.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 11/02/2023 20:31

The only Stacy I know is a man!

xprincessxjanetx · 11/02/2023 20:38

It does have that 'dated' 80's feel to it! I'm not keen personally but there isn't anything wrong with it per se.

Houselamp · 11/02/2023 20:51

It reminds me of Gavin and Stacy but that accociation is already becoming irrelevant. It does feel really 80s though, like Charmaine, Becky, Gemma

Viviennemary · 11/02/2023 20:54

Its pretty dire these days. Like Tracey and Sharon.
