Not sure what to think. Someone close to me is considering it.

I really like it actually. Big name, yes, but the sound fits with other more common names like Rowan, Robin, Dylan etc, and I like it’s pedigree and the fact it’s not overly macho-sounding.

I think it would work fine if you were a slightly alternative/bohemian/artsy family whose circle had a lot of unusual names. I can see it being less well received elsewhere though!

Buying a Merlin annual pass for Merlin would be slightly awkward.

Nicknnames, Merl, Mez, Maz, M, Mella Mezza 🤔

God no

WeeOrcadian · 21/01/2023 18:49

Stop it. Back away. Blame hormones. But find another name.

helloelsie · 21/01/2023 18:55

Love it. Knew a guy years ago out clubbing called Zeus. Always a cool guy and worked in the music biz. Merlin would make him stand out that's for sure

MrsPutnamNaomiDarling · 21/01/2023 18:56

Thrice nay.

I’d never heard of a bird called a merlin, only a marlin, but the RSPB lists it.

Nonetheless, I agree with the comments above.

A marlin is a bloody great fish. A Merlin is a small, and relatively common, raptor.

I realise this adds nothing to the debate, but there it is.

As for OP’s question: NAY.

JackieDaws · 21/01/2023 19:00

Yes, or Emrys.

Slicedpeaches · 21/01/2023 19:03

I went to school with a Merlin, when we did introductions in year 7 his name got a laugh in every class, poor kid.
He then got an unfortunate haircut and grew a wispy little moustache so his silly name wasn't the only thing people laughed at him for.
Snapchat was getting popular when we were in KS4 and people used to take pictures of him and draw a wizards hat on his head.
He went by Martyn when we went to college.

cptartapp · 21/01/2023 19:04

I know a Merlyn. He's 40's. Not keen.

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 21/01/2023 19:09

Nope.

Simon Howard, late of Castle Howard called his son Merlin. Definite nope from me.

jackstini · 21/01/2023 19:14

I know an Estonian Merlin, she's late 20's - suits her but it's unusual

tinytemper66 · 21/01/2023 19:20

Why would you?

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 21/01/2023 19:47

Nay

GoneToday · 21/01/2023 19:52

Well it’s better than Gandalf or Dumbledore if we are looking at wizarding names but not my favourite otherwise!

Johnisafckface · 21/01/2023 19:53

nay, reminds me of a wizard

Fridayyesterday · 21/01/2023 23:35

Yes, indeed.
Also a type of gun , bike , apartments in Canary Wharf, hardware and probably Many More.

But - in my opinion - not a safe (or kind) name to give a child.

LulooLemon · 21/01/2023 23:54

Nay to Merlín

kitcat15 · 22/01/2023 00:21

It’s a good dogs name

Mumtobabyhavoc · 22/01/2023 04:14

Oh, please no. 🤦‍♀️

MissMarplesbag · 22/01/2023 06:37

Poor kid will get horrifically bullied at school especially if he can't defend himself or produce amazing exam results.

Hadtocomment · 22/01/2023 13:15

I really like it.
