How to spell..

Hi,
The name I want to call my daughter would be pronounced Rome-E…how do you think I should spell it to try to minimise it being pronounced wrong
Romee or Romie (other suggestions welcome)

econOMY is pronounced economy and not econoamy

So Romy should be Romy and not Roamy

There are lots of anomalies in the English language. Climb/limb cough/rough/bough/ought rover/cover. Just because you say economy, doesn’t necessarily mean that Romy is pronounced Rom-ee!

Romy is pronounced Roam-ee in English speaking countries.

Spelled Romy.

To get the 'Rommy' pronunciation in English, you need the two Ms, as in Tommy.

Romy is definitely "roam ee" ime. I teach two of them.

Much like pony isn't pronounced pon-y.

(not saying that's definitive btw, just acknowledging that's how I hear it used on an almost daily basis. In fact, I had a colleague Romy who was roam ee as well so it's my experience that the "oa" sound is prevalent)

The standard pronunciation is Row-mee and has been for years. Same as Roma is Row-muh and Roman is Row-man

English doesn’t work like that.

There was an actress called Romy Schneider. Pronounced Roam-y. So yes. Romy.

Technically it does work, but it equally it could be pronounced with a long o sound with that spelling. It looks like a made up name that people won’t automatically recognise so if you spell it Romee, it will be read and pronounced in the way you’re trying to avoid.

If you go for Rommy, people will automatically read it along the same lines as Tommy or Jonny and think of it with a short o sound. And it looks better.

PP are absolutely correct: Romy is pronounced to rhyme with ‘show me’ in the UK. I suspect this comes from the fact that it was traditionally a diminutive of Rosemary.

I've only ever known her name to be pronounced Roam-y. She's the only person I knew of with the name until recently, so I must've heard her name mispronounced on TV and in interviews. Apologies.

Ah, @Pinkdafodils I've just seen your link. The German sounds kind of in between the two. But I contend that the English and US pronunciation is Roam-y even if she pronounced it more as Rom-y.

Romy. I've only ever heard that pronounced with the long O in the UK. I think Romie would get you the pronunciation you want too, but when it's the other way round - people having heard it and guessing at the spelling - I think you would find a lot of people assumed it was Romy.

It's Romy. Please don't spell it with -ee on the end. Most names spelt with -ee instead of their usual -y look daft. I'm a teacher and have come across Haylee, Bethanee and Cassidee. Romee is on a par with Jennee, Emilee etc..

I did originally feel like Romee looks a little try hard trendy 😂
