Thoughts on the name Twyla?

I recently came across the name Twyla. I love how it sounds & it’s unusual without being too crazy. I definitely don’t know any Twyla’s. What’s other people’s thoughts on it? Will also take other name suggestions. Thanks.

Sounds like the sort of nonsense phonetic name you hear on Love Island

Yep! You’re absolutely right. Thankfully not popular where I live but do know a dog called poppy although same with Lola & Bella. I think with most names people can associate it with something somewhat negative. I have looked at every other flower name don’t really see any I like apart from blossom but I know my partner would think I’m crazy & surname sounds similar so it wouldn’t sound right.

What about Briar, Aster, Delphine, Heather, Iris, Ivy, Jessamine, Lillian, Rosanna, Viola or Willow?

Carryonmarion · 17/01/2023 14:37

Poppy is a million times nicer

Spudlet · 17/01/2023 14:39

Just here for the Hogfather references. GNU Sir Pterry.

I’ve seen all those names on Google unfortunately don’t like any of them. I like Rosie but my middle name is rose.

Luna is an ancient goddess name, not the same vibe as Twyla at all. Twyla would be unusual outside of the US I think. Personally I think it sounds fine, nothing wrong with it at all. Poppy is nice, quite popular, especially a few years back. I actually probably prefer Twyla

Noonesperfect · 17/01/2023 14:46

Poppy is a great name 👍

NortieTortie · 17/01/2023 14:51

Ooh, I actually really like Twyla. Poppy is lovely too.

I think Rosie would be a sweet nod to your middle name!

mathanxiety · 17/01/2023 14:55

I've never met one north of the Mason Dixon line, or under the age of 75.

It's a southern American granny name.

Nice name imo, charming and old fashioned.

Other names in the same ballpark are Winona amd Willa.

WisteriaLodge · 17/01/2023 14:57

God it's awful, she'll spend the rest of her life telling people how to pronounce and spell it.

mathanxiety · 17/01/2023 14:57

Poppy is as twee as it gets.

Can't see the attraction.

WisteriaLodge · 17/01/2023 14:58

Just seen your update on the name Poppy, lovely choice!

Sounds like all the astrology related names I’ve looked at since it is an abbreviation of twilight. I’m conflicted atm.

Yes I first heard it on schitts creek & thought it was really pretty. Then heard of the famous Twyla Tharp. I was curious to see how it sounded to other people. To me it has the same vibe as Luna etc.

Twyla Tharp!! Possibly the most unfortunate combination of names ever. Sounds like a terrible speech impediment.

You should definitely go with Poppy then, if you love it!

It's not my cup of tea (neither is Rosie) as too 'girly-girly', but it's absolutely fine and lots of people love it.

Rosanna/Rosalind are nice (then you could have nickname Rosie).

Sleepless1096 · 17/01/2023 15:09

Lyra is nice too and sounds similar to some of your other suggestions.

Workawayxx · 17/01/2023 15:10

Poppy is lovely. I think it'd be fine to use Rosie when your middle name is rose.

I also like (nature/flower based):

Ivy
Jasmine
Violet

You may want to reconsider that when you hear that she has a sister, Twanette.

(I absolutely love Twyla Tharp. Her book on artistic creativity is properly life-changing.)

Please don’t!

Rose1111 · 17/01/2023 15:15

My last name I like … Sunday. Thoughts? Before I stick with poppy

It's an awful name. Sorry.

whytesnow · 17/01/2023 15:15

Poppy is pretty

riotlady · 17/01/2023 15:17

Sounds like a name for a pony.

Poppy is nice though!

You could go for Matilda and then Tilda for short? Has the same kind of vibe without being so out there?

Matilda/Tilda Rose works very well, IMO.
