Hey everyone. Quick one..

I'm due a baby in a couple of weeks and me and my husband have a name picked out. We haven't really told a lot of people the name as we don't tend to until the baby arrives and we are 100% sure.

My best friend has just got a dog and has named it the name we have picked for the baby, we haven't told her the name so it's a coincidence but would you still use the name? I'm now gutted in case I go off the name which is the only one we have agreed we both like!

Help!!

I would still use the name

ShandaLear · 15/01/2023 18:41

Rover is a lovely name for a baby.

BrutusMcDogface · 15/01/2023 18:44

I don’t think I would use the name if it was me!

toocold54 · 15/01/2023 18:44

Yes I would still use it unless it was very unique then people may think you’ve copied the dogs name.

CrabbyDingus · 15/01/2023 18:44

wouldn't bother me.
Unless it's Rover, don't do that.

Greyhave · 15/01/2023 18:45

Just use the name. As others have said the dog will be long gone by the time baby is a teenager!

silentpool · 15/01/2023 18:46

Someone named their baby the same name as my cat. I did make some jokes about them naming him after the cat but now no one thinks of it.

LaLuz7 · 15/01/2023 18:48

I would still use it. Unless it's one of those names that are more commonly used on pets than humans

Coffeesnob11 · 15/01/2023 18:49

My bf called her dog my preferred name (again hadn't told her). My exdh wouldn't use the name because of the dog even though we live 120 miles away. We chose something else but I wished I had pushed harder to use it.

HideousKinky · 15/01/2023 18:53

I gave my 3rd DD the same name as my step-mother's dog!
We used to refer to them as "Lucy Dog" and "Lucy Baby" (not the real name) when they were both in the same room.
Dog is now long dead and DD is 27.
Go ahead with the name you've chosen - your child will use the name for decades after the dog is no longer here

AnOldCynic · 15/01/2023 18:57

Don't worry about it. I think it's quite cute and I'm sure your friend will understand, tell her now maybe? It's nice that they will both have the same name and can hang together in future!

... but Im guessing that's the baby crapping in neighbour gardens that's the issue here?

Allschoolsareartschools · 15/01/2023 19:11

My adult dd has the same name as several dogs & cats. In fact in any group of any animals there will likely be one with her name!
Definitely still use it, we've had a good laugh over the years because of it.

Season0fTheWitch · 15/01/2023 19:17

If it's Luna, change your baby's name. If not, it'll be fine

BasiliskStare · 15/01/2023 19:19

My son has the same name as a friend's dog did - not a problem - DS still here - dog sadly not.

2bazookas · 15/01/2023 19:51

We had a secondhand cat who arrived with a name she knew, so we kept it.. Next Door had a new baby and announced they wanted to call her the cats name, would we please rename the cat to avoid embarrassment? I said we were not at all embarassed, but if they were, they should find another baby name. They got over the embarrassment right away :-) Cat and baby shared their name with no problems at all.

Thesonglastslonger · 15/01/2023 19:56

If you both love the name it seems silly not to use it. That friend might move away / sell the dog etc but your child’s name is forever.

Birchtree1 · 15/01/2023 20:04

I am a vet and regularly have cats and dogs coming in with the same name as my children. I quite like it and will tell my kids about it afterwards. They like it too.

Could be worse for your baby than having the same name as a dog. My DM was named - deliberately - after a horse.

Ah, Mrs Arkle Smith? Lovely lady!

astarsheis · 15/01/2023 20:30

We names our DS after my friend's cat...DS has outlived the cat 😁

Agreed!

I'd be thinking twice anyway if it's likely thought of as a pet name.

SenecaFallsRedux · 15/01/2023 21:44

It wouldn't bother me. But perhaps your friend will change the dog's name if you tell her that was the name you had picked. Certainly the dog has not had time to get used to the name.

2chocolateoranges · 15/01/2023 21:46

Our neighbour has a dog the same name as our daughter. We find it funny but they had the dog after dd.

it’s a bit creepy when the dog is out for a late night pee and the neighbour is whispering loudly on the dog to come in!

lifeinthehills · 15/01/2023 21:53

I'd still use the name. It's just a coincidence and no big deal.

RandomPerson42 · 15/01/2023 21:58

Is it Kevin?
