For a little girl- what do you think?

I like it. Shakespearean. The meaning isn't great though, and people might think it's Porsche.

IglesiasPiggl · 09/01/2023 20:02

I think it's a bit pretentious.

Jessbow · 09/01/2023 20:02

Bit pretentious .Public school name, well heeled parents

WestendVBroadway · 09/01/2023 20:04

Not very helpful I know, but.....I had a cat called Portia!

Funny as I think the opposite!

DramaAlpaca · 09/01/2023 20:05

I like many Shakespearean names, but not this one.

This.

On the 'posh' aspect, names tend to start posh and then become middle class then working etc. over time. Freakonomics did a thing.

UnfinishedBusiness · 09/01/2023 20:09

Makes me immediately think Sloane ranger from the 80s.

MolesOnPoles · 09/01/2023 20:16

I like the legal connotations.

But a friend used to teach one who pronounced it ‘Port-ia’. It’s her own name so fine, but be aware of potential slip ups!

Leading · 09/01/2023 20:23

White Lotus.

Enko · 09/01/2023 20:38

I like it

RambamThankyouMam · 10/01/2023 06:06

I hate it.

It sounds like "abortion."

PermanentTemporary · 10/01/2023 06:09

Funny, I like Marcia but not this.

Tlolljs · 10/01/2023 06:19

I like it but people will think you’ve named her after a car.

Catoneverychair · 10/01/2023 06:33

It's the way you'd pronounce Porsche. A bit weird.

BCBird · 10/01/2023 06:34

Middle class privileged springs to mind. Names have to 'fit' the child. Some do not conjure up any class or temperament image(e.g
naughty child) where as others do.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 10/01/2023 10:42

I like it.

From the Latin porcus, meaning "pig"; because your average Brit is going to know that, eh? Some people are just pointless show-offs. And look at the endless, parroting of equally silly showing off when someone mentions Claudia.

Me too. This is the sort of name that was very posh in the 60s and 70s and is now very down-market in my experience.

PoinsettiaPosturing · 10/01/2023 11:45

Portia Featherington - desperate/over reaching. Too try hard

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 10/01/2023 11:56

I quite like it. Only 4 girls given the name in 2021 the darkgreener site tells me. I wonder why it's so unused.

Too posh and simultaneously too downmarket if the replies here are anything to go by. But of course...

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 10/01/2023 11:57

I think it would go well with a boring surname. Portia Jones sounds cool to me.

JunglePug · 10/01/2023 11:58

"Portia" is one of my fave names!

CatJumperTwat · 10/01/2023 11:58

You'll get people mispronouncing it with a hard T.

PatriciaHolm · 10/01/2023 12:04

It just reminds me of A fish called Wanda!
