Clémence
Raphaëlle (I really like it, can shorten to Raph too but DH not sure
Elodie - works in English and French not sure if it’s too like Melody but it always sounds cheerful to me
Sylvie - yes I know an old lady name in France but it’s coming back

Ha two of my children's names are on this thread.

I'm not keen on Clemence and Elodie is becoming very common and is a bit boring tbh.

DoesItMakeYouFeelBetter · 08/01/2023 21:29

Sylvie is nice. The others are not.
Elodie is becoming popular.

PritiPatelsMaker · 08/01/2023 21:29

I really like them all. Sorry if that's no help Wink

YewNearsEve · 08/01/2023 21:30

Raphaëlle is beautiful and most English speakers could have a good go with that name.
Clemence would rely on French pronunciation to sound pretty and you might not always get that in the UK.
Elodie is pretty but is not such a gorgeous name as R. And I don’t really like Sylvie, sorry.

Bobbybobbins · 08/01/2023 21:30

Love Elodie

YewNearsEve · 08/01/2023 21:31

I’m not fussy about popular names if they’re nice! There’s often a good reason for lots of people liking certain names.

FlairBand · 08/01/2023 21:31

Are they all girls names? Sorry I think they’re beautiful but unless you’re in a country where they’re more common, the first two I think will always be mistaken / teased for being boys’ names.

Thf has to be elodie or Sylvie for me.

YewNearsEve · 08/01/2023 21:35

I think most English speaking people in the UK would assume - elle and that sound to be a girls name ending.
Elle on its own is a fairly popular girls name in the UK, as is Belle, helped by Disney. Isabelle/Isabel, Annabel/Annabelle are well known and historical UK names.

vitaminC · 08/01/2023 21:37

Are they likely to live in France at some point?
Almost all Elodies in France are in their 30s-40s now and it's a bit bland.
Most Sylvies are in their 60s so not old enough to become fashionable again just yet. Also it was extremely popular in the 1960s so there's an awful lot of them around still.

Raphaëlle and Clémence are timeless and beautiful. I also know a Raphaëlla which could work for you.

Rauha · 08/01/2023 21:40

Raphaëlle is beautiful

MaverickGooseGoose · 08/01/2023 21:48

Elodie

Jadviga · 09/01/2023 02:52

Love love love Raphaëlle. It's strong and pretty and timeless.

Not so keen on the others, Clémence is nice enough but Elodie feels like it lacks a bit of substance to me, and Sylvie as pointed out up thread is a bit dated.

octoberfarm · 09/01/2023 03:09

Love Raphaëlle! Elodie is pretty too.

garlictwist · 09/01/2023 05:22

Élodie is a middle aged name and Sylvie is a gran's name to me.

Not too sure about Clémence, it's not very pretty. I like Raphaëlle though

RobinRobinMouse · 09/01/2023 05:27

I wouldn't go for Raphaelle or Clemence unless you are happy to drop the accents regularly, they also do sound quite masculine to me even though I realize they probably shouldn't. Elodie is pretty but could end up as Ellie, which is nice but popular. Sylvie is lovely, it is quite popular around here but I think not so much that it old put me off.

LetsDoThis2023 · 09/01/2023 05:37

Clémence, if pronounced properly, is lovely.

Sylvie is the best!

Thanks for taking the time to tell us something we already know about the name Elle, appreciate that.

My point is that as lovely as it is I’m not sure I’d want to lumber a kid with having to explain that it’s not Raphael it’s RaphaelLE every five minutes.

Isabel/le, Annabel/le or Belle (m. Beau in fact) are not comparable as there are no boys names which sound the same.

autienotnaughty · 09/01/2023 05:42

Not keen on raphaelle but love the other 3. Agree Eloide is more popular now

Twoinapod · 09/01/2023 06:01

Clémence and Raphaëlle both seem masculine to me.
Eloidie is nice, easy to say and write.
Sylvie I don’t like, sounds like it should be a brand of tampons or something

daretodenim · 09/01/2023 06:29

Elodie is also technically with an accent (Élodie) although I guess it depends on how you want to pronounce it - and that then begs the question whether you want that discussion about the bane!

If you're not/DP isn't French, I'd not go for any name with an accent. Unless you're based there. It looks a bit try hard and most English-speaking people don't know how they change the pronunciation anyway, making them redundant. And it's a lifetime of correcting spelling to add an accent that people don't know the name of, so you have to signal it with your hands. I say this as someone with French children with accents in their surname (as do I). I'd rather them just removed, but that'd piss off half the family!

I like Sylvie because I've met quite a few really lovely ones. But with English pronunciation, Sylvia sounds nicer.

Flatandhappy · 09/01/2023 06:36

I really like all of your names but if you live in the UK I wouldn’t give a child a name with an accent in the spelling as it will rarely be spelt correctly. Most online forms couldn’t cope with my maiden surname because it was “non standard” in English and it was a real pain to always have to spell it incorrectly to have it accepted.

liveforsummer · 09/01/2023 06:42

I agree with no other context I'd assume raphaelle (I know there is accents, I can't be bothered to find them- you'd probably get this a lot) was male. How about Raphaella? Any Raf's I know are male too although that wouldn't put me off, it's only a nick name. Not a huge fan of Clemence - again accent issue, people will pronounce it incorrectly. Elodie is lovely I know one who is 15 so ahead of the times of it being popular and always had lovely comments, never thought about the connection to Melody. I love Sylvie and agree it's definitely ready for a come back

BabyFour2023 · 09/01/2023 07:10

I’m assuming you’re French. I think they’re all pretty easily pronounced in English. My favourite is Elodie, not keen on Clemence.. Raphaelle sounds masculine to me; too close to Raphael.

inappropriateraspberry · 09/01/2023 07:25

Raphaelle makes me think of ninja turtles I'm afraid!
Clemence again is a bit too 'male' I think.
I like Elodie or Sylvie.
My gran was Sylvia and called Sylvie a lot. A bit old lady ish but a nice name. Be aware she may get nicknames/associations with Sylvanian Families.

pastypirate · 09/01/2023 07:51

I have an Elodie. She's 10 and we have net 2 other Elodie's ever. It does get mispronounced as ello Dee sone times and much more than my other dd name which is much more rare
