Clémence
Raphaëlle (I really like it, can shorten to Raph too but DH not sure
Elodie - works in English and French not sure if it’s too like Melody but it always sounds cheerful to me
Sylvie - yes I know an old lady name in France but it’s coming back

OP posts:

Aren't they the names of the teenage mutant turtles ?

NewYearNora · 09/01/2023 08:13

OP I think you need to say whether you're in France or somewhere else.

My gut feeling is that Raphaelle and Clemence are "too much" to use in Britain (see, I've already ruined them by not using the accents!) and Elodie or Sylvie would be easier to manage here.

Perhaps different in France but obviously, I don't know.

Axahooxa · 09/01/2023 08:15

I love Elodie, Sylvie and Raphaelle.
All gorgeous names.

daretodenim · 09/01/2023 08:44

I think OP also needs to clarify what she thinks the pronunciation of them is in her mind.
A-lodie or Eh-lodie?
Cl-ay-m-eh-nce or Cl-eh-meh-nce?

Maybe worth asking posters how they'd pronounce them too.

Which highlights part of the problem with names with an accent.

And that extends to:
Seelvee or Sihlvee.

DuchessOfSausage · 09/01/2023 08:47

Are you naming a middle aged French woman?

ElizabethBest · 09/01/2023 08:51

Clémence is one of my favourite girls’ names. If you particularly want a French one that works well in both languages -
Camille
Beatrice
Emilie
Elise
Delphine
Are also pretty.

AllyCatTown · 09/01/2023 09:02

I’m more familiar with Raphael which I think most people in the UK would be as well, so I’m not sure how to say Raphaëlle and would pronounce it basically the same. I’d be cautious about using it as I think people hearing the name would think it’s a man’s name.

I think Sylvie is nice.

inquisitorgeneral · 09/01/2023 10:14

Do you live in the UK or France?

Clémence, while pretty, will never be pronounced correctly in the UK - you would get something that CLEM-ins with the flat English "eh" sound. Most UK people can't pronounce French vowels.

Raphaëlle is nice but you would probably be faced with confusion with the masculine name Raphael, and people leaving the accent off.

Elodie and Sylvie - work fine in the UK, though Sylvie is definitely dated in France (Baby Boomer name) and Elodie is dated to the 1980s/90s.

I prefer Camille. Anyone that's watched Death in Paradise can pronounce it and have a good stab(!) at spelling it
Or how about Cosette (les Mis fans will know it and be able to spell it I'm sure. )

BubziOwl · 09/01/2023 11:07

I love them all except Elodie. I also love the English pronunciation of Clemence so it's a win-win imo!

PolarBlair · 09/01/2023 11:11

Sylvie
Elodie
Beautiful ❤️

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 09/01/2023 11:14

Raphaëlle is my favourite.

With Elodie I just hear the letters L-O-D.

Sylvie is fine, such a MN name. Prefer Sylvia.

Clémence sounds nice in a French accent, less so in an English one.

Where would the child be growing up?

SVRT19674 · 09/01/2023 12:08

Sorry, I think they are all awful, especially Raphaelle, sounds male. I went to school with an Elodie, I am 48. The only one I would consider. You did ask. Sorry I am not of more help.

OverTheRubicon · 09/01/2023 12:12

If you're planning to move to France, all are fine (Sylvie maybe a bit old). If you're planning to be in the UK for a while, I'd go with Elodie - why give her a name that is likely to be frequently misspelled and mispronounced?

There are also plenty of other unusual (for the UK) French names that are more easily pronounced.

ivykaty44 · 09/01/2023 12:13

I love all of your names

DuchessOfSausage · 09/01/2023 12:48

I thought all the names on the list were dated.

Elodie is nice in a french accent, but ends up being Elluhdy in the UK.
It seems a lot more popular than the stats, but that might be regional.
I think it blends in with all the other El- names.

Clemence is nice but will be Clemuns in the UK.
Raphaelle looks like a jumble of letters and Rafael is quite popular in the UK.

FT123456 · 09/01/2023 12:51

I like elodie most

RambamThankyouMam · 09/01/2023 13:49

Raphaëlle is gorgeous.

Clémence I'm not fond of because the "clem" sound disgusts me.

Elodie is the new Amelie, given by parents (in the UK) who think they're a bit special and intellectual.

Ipanema01 · 09/01/2023 14:39

I love Clemence! Raphaelle also gorgeous

Mammyloveswine · 09/01/2023 15:11

I love Elodie!!

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 09/01/2023 20:15

Just echoing other posters:

Raphaelle seems too masculine to me, especially with the nn Rafe.
Clemence will be butchered by English speakers.
I like Elodie.
Sylvie is a bit of a grandma name but so are many other popular ones atm.
