Scottish Boys names

I like Gaelic names like Callan and Donal whereas OH likes strong Scotts like Jock and Hamish.

We are considering Munro which is commonly a surname but have researched that it is also a boy or girl first name.

Any thoughts, would you assume it was a family surname?

Thanks in advance.

I'd think 'mountain'

pitterypattery00 · 02/01/2023 10:54

I'd think surname or mountain! On that theme, I know a little boy called Nevis.

Hamish is nice, not keen on Jock - too nicknamey for me.

Other ideas -
Struan, Nairn, Sholto, Calum, Fraser, Euan.

LoopyGremlin · 02/01/2023 10:54

I know a couple of boys called Munro. What about Struan, Lachlan, Ruaridh?

scottishnames · 02/01/2023 12:10

Munro is perfectly OK, but - unless it's family surname - I do, like a previous poster, tend first of all to think 'mountain'. But faced with a real person, I'm sure that would pass.

What about:
Dougal, Alasdair, Innes, Athol, Magnus, Fergus, Fingal, Bryce, Hugh...

If it matters, Hamish is an English-language version of the vocative form of Gaelic Seumas ( = James).

Also, if it matters, to be technically correct, Ruairidh, suggested above, should have two x letter 'i'.

Munro is my bfs middle name, I like it

KirstenBlest · 02/01/2023 12:16

Mungo

anxiousatnight · 02/01/2023 12:19

Magnus?

Montague22 · 02/01/2023 12:22

I like Finnan as a Gaelic name
I don’t love Munro but I think it would grow on me as names do, and it’s fine as a first name.

Redannie118 · 02/01/2023 12:29

My mums family is from Aberdeenshire and Hay is a popular boys name. Going through a list of names from Outlander-
Alexander
Malcolm
Duncan
Dougal
Fergus
Fraser or Mackenzie but as first names.

Purplecatshopaholic · 02/01/2023 12:29

Hamish is awful, and Jock is a (bad) nickname. Both work for pets better, lol. Like Monro, also Innes, Stewart, Andrew, Alasdair/Alastair.

VioletLemon · 02/01/2023 12:53

Murdo
Cal
Callum
Seon

redbigbananafeet · 02/01/2023 12:56

Lots of really strong suggestions. We've lots of boys on both sides so many have been used including island names Harris and Lewis. Nairn is a good suggestion. The mountain connotation isn't really a problem as we're surrounded by them and have 'bagged' a fair few. Ruairidh sounds lovely in both our accents too. So all bar one don't 'dislike' it which is reassuring and I take it it's also not seen as overly 'out there' or quirky? Thanks again x

Oh that's interesting, can I ask where about your based? I like Lachlan and Lochlan but it doesn't sound great in partners dialect. We have a lovely Struan slready in the family x

I'm in Edinburgh @redbigbananafeet
I'm a teacher so have taught boys with these names (all nice!). It was difficult choosing names for my own children due to association with kids I had taught so a lot of time went into compiling my list!

Swanna · 02/01/2023 13:25

What about Keir or Murdo?

itssquidstella · 02/01/2023 13:32

I have a Magnus! I have Scottish and Norwegian heritage so it fit the bill perfectly :)

I like Struan, Angus, Fergus and Lachlan too.

BinBandit · 02/01/2023 13:44

Place names and surnames are all fair game for first names in Scotland. I don't know any Munros but I wouldn't bat an eyelid.

We attempted to pick a name for our youngest by sticking pins in map and got Cairn quite a few times. We tried it out but it didn't really work in the accent where we lived at the time.

I'd also suggest:

Gregor
Moray
Duncan
Calvin
Craig
Malcolm

MrsBungle · 02/01/2023 13:46

Cameron

Awumminnscotland · 02/01/2023 13:48

Munro has been my favourite boys name for years. Not sure why it's not been popular before now. Don't think anyone would bat an eyelid about it. It's a lovely strong name, could be for either sex in my opinion.

ditalini · 02/01/2023 14:09

As pp has already said, surnames for first names is very common in Scotland (traditionally often from mother's family). A lot of common Scottish first names are originally surnames.

pairofrollerskates · 02/01/2023 15:15

As@ditalini says ...
Campbell
Murray
Menzies (pronounced "Mingus")
Mackenzie
Hunter
Munro

I know a Forres and a Camus (local place names)

I really like the names of the Big Boy Cousins from the Katie Morag books-
Jamie, Dougal (there are various, less anglicised, spellings eg Dughall, Dugald), Hector, Archie and Murdo Iain

YodaBabe · 02/01/2023 15:20

I have a ds called hamish and I love it. Took ages to find a name that fit him.

He has a friend called Ramsay after the clan Ramsay which I think is lovely.

Hugasauras · 02/01/2023 15:22

I know a couple of young Munros, I think it's a nice name. Innes? Fraser? Calder?

Abhannmor · 02/01/2023 15:28

Murdo is definitely a first name which is similar to Munro.
Hamish is a Gaelic name essentially. The vocative form of Séamus/ Seumas.

What about Craig or Kyle? Duncan?

Rab maybe. Hard to think of exclusively lowland names !

custardbear · 02/01/2023 15:52

I like Munro, we had it on our list as wanted a Scottish boys name.
