What is the point? I live in Germany and speak fluent German. Not sure what this is genuinely showing.

Joolsin · 30/12/2022 20:22

Interesting - both boy and girl names are mostly all very un-German sounding. Could easily be lists from an English-speaking country.

It’s showing the most popular names in Germany by numbers, obviously. Some people are interested in statistics.

If you don’t care why are you here wasting my time and yours?

Quite rude.

Am I right in thinking that Germany is one of those countries with an official name list to chose from?

The girls list wouldn't look out of place in the UK for the most part.

Yes they’re quite international sounding. I’ve noticed this too.

I'm surprised there aren't more German names on the list.

JoyPeaceSleep · 30/12/2022 20:24

Wow, interesting. Those could be the popular names in England, Ireland, America.

No there’s no such list. The person you register the name with has to approve, though. But as long as you can prove the name exists you’re usually good.

There are some, but further down.

Leni is German and quite popular.

Others are Levke, Malte etc.

To be fair most names making the UK lists aren’t English either. Sophie is French, Chloe is Greek, Hannah and Sarah are Hebrew etc

@TeaAddict235 , I'm interested. HTH.

TeaAddict235 · 30/12/2022 20:28

Well @misslucy92 it wasn't meant to be rude. As someone who lives in Germany has 3 kids at school & nursery there, certain names, especially those on the list are known for emphasising Aryan heritage or as being Aryan indicators, hence my stance. No offence was meant, but it is a very sad and significant state of affairs. No divergence meant. 2 of my own children's names are on those lists and it is often remarked that their names don't "fit" their heritage.

Thought it was something official... there was surprise my DD1s name was "allowed" (scottish) but it was because she has a British birth certificate not German despite being born in Germany.

MissDollyMix · 30/12/2022 20:30

I’m an Emma and spent part of my childhood in Germany. Was frequently told by my German family that Emma was really old-fashioned and out of date. The equivalent of Gertrude (or something along those lines) So funny to see it’s obviously back in fashion. I can show my face in Germany again without fear of being labelled outdated!

PuttingDownRoots · 30/12/2022 20:31

Another question... Lea and Lia... are they pronounced the same in German?

Footle · 30/12/2022 20:33

@PuttingDownRoots , not the same. Lay-a and Lee-a.

That’s such a weird comment, I honestly don’t know what to say.

This list has nothing to do with being aryan and almost all of the names are international, as many people here have already noticed. It’s just what most Germans named their kids.

I lived there too, as I said I have family there. I also speak German.

I‘m sorry that people said stupid things about your kids‘ names, that’s obviously horrible. But doesn’t excuse being rude in a harmless thread about popular names.

No, they are leh-a (long EH sound but not lay-a, that’s Leia and different yet again).

Lia is lee-a.

OP I get this! As stated in the Original post, German names are quite popular in the UK. Its just an up to date list of the current most popular names to help those who may have an interest.

Love Leni and Leoni. Not overly fussed by the boys list though.

KindergartenKop · 30/12/2022 20:54

I love that Paul is so high up. You don't get many of those these days in the UK.

That's true! Names like Sophie, Hannah, Sarah etc I always view as English which shows how engraved they've become.

Reugny · 30/12/2022 21:02

😂

I didn't realise how DP's children including our DD and lots of our friends' children are on the popular German names lists for the last 5 years. None of us are German.

lottie198 · 30/12/2022 22:25

Two of my sons names are on the list 🤣

ShonkyCat · 01/01/2023 19:34

The 20 names all bore the hell out of me at this point although I do still love names like Sophia and Hanna. But the list is basically all of my children's friends and classmates although I don't know any Antons....yet.

I'm interested to see Hilda and Wilma are climbing. Can't imagine either of those on a young girl and they strike me as pretty hideous but perhaps they'll grow on me.

misslucy92 · 01/01/2023 21:28

Hedda is climbing too. They’re not for me either but I do like Hilda better than Tilda.

My sons name is on the boys list 💙
