What is everyone’s opinion of this name?. I have fell in love with it a bit, we have a DS named Adam and I’ve struggled to find boys names that I love. Are there any negative connotations with the name?

Tiltedandwilted · 27/12/2022 16:57

No

Swanna · 27/12/2022 16:57

I know a little Lyall, quite common in Scotland. Think it's nice

misscupcakes · 27/12/2022 16:58

Lyle's golden syrup!

What about Kyle?

ZuckerwatterMaus · 27/12/2022 16:58

It was my maiden name so I think of it as a surname .
Going with ds to the cinema on Friday to watch “ Lyle , Lyle , Crocodile .”

Adviceneeded200 · 27/12/2022 16:58

Sugar and Syrup!

Sorry just reminds me of Tate and Lyle the Sugar and Golden Syrup company

Twotolove · 27/12/2022 16:59

Reminds me of Lyle Lyle crocodile Grin

windandtherain · 27/12/2022 17:01

I’m not bothered about the golden syrup links😂.

It's lovely.
Also the name "Lye", I knew one person called this once, I thought it lovely and have never heard it since, so I think it's also unusual.

Not sure being named after a corrosive substance is that lovely

Lyle Lyle crocodile! Good film.

scottishnames · 27/12/2022 17:07

As a previous poster has said, Lyall (that spelling) is a name used in Scotland. It's originally a surname. Traditionally, the mother's family surname was a popular choice for a second son.

weewestie · 27/12/2022 17:10

I know of a good few, including a Lyall, and never heard of any negative connotations or nicknames. One of them is DS17's friend, so I'm sure if there was an embarrassing nickname for it, I'd have heard it.

It's also part of the name of a local landmark where I am, and T&L had a factory here.

Pinkdelight3 · 27/12/2022 17:11

The only other association I have for it, Tate aside, is Lyle Lovett, the - um - unusual looking fellow that Julia Roberts went out with briefly. Not keen.

MyEasterEggs · 27/12/2022 17:12

I love it. It was on my list but my daughter keeps talking about the aforementioned movie so I’ve let it go. Sugar and syrup references wouldn’t bother me. I actually like the name Tate too!

Krakenwakes · 27/12/2022 17:12

There are negative associations, just as there are with Tate -because of the sugar and slavery connections. Tate is the more famous name, but the two go together.

I saw this with dd recentjy. Surprisingly good for adults too.

Lyle is fine as a first name. Really most male names work as first or surnames, (sometimes with the addition of an "s" or "son").

windandtherain · 27/12/2022 17:53

Mixed opinions I guess, but nothing too awful. Thank you :)

It doesn’t in my accent?

Lyle the time was the first thing to come to my mind. I've never heard this name before.

scottishnames · 27/12/2022 19:50

Of course it doesn't sound like liar - no more than lime or line or lion or any other word begining with the syllable 'li' does.
It's pronounced 'Ly-all' (the 'y' to rhyme with 'sky' and the 'all' to rhyme with 'hall')

Yes this is how I pronounce it too.

I know people aren’t loving it, but nothing too bad, so definitely going to be top of my list

Awful.

Soubriquet · 27/12/2022 20:36

Since I literally watched George of the Jungle with dd the other day, all I can see is Lyle Van De Groot..
