At first thought, would you associate the name Quinn to be a boy or girls name?

Girl.

Quinn from Daria and Glee.

Surnames work better as boy names in general, especially in the U.K. There is the girl’s name Queenie, I suppose, if you like. I know a teenage one, and there was one in the Adrian Mole books too. Traditionally a nickname for Victoria, though the one I know, it’s her given name.

Either but I prefer it as a girl’s name

Never heard of Quim and I’ve been here all my life. It absolutely doesn’t cross mine or anyones mind when we look at my friends new born Quinn. The only thing that worries me is how popular it’s getting.

“Quim” might be in the dictionary but it doesn’t appear to be in general use. I don’t know anyone who knows what it means, and a search of four different trend explorers shows minimal usage online. Google only really shows searches for what it means, and most of those are from Wales, but search volume is really low.

It’s also a fairly middle of the range name in some countries. Quim Gutierrez probably being the most known example.

MrsMop1964 · 26/12/2022 13:08

I'd also think of quim (possibly an age thing since it seems it's fallen out of use) . Also people asking if her first name is Harley as in Harley Quinn in the Marvel comics.

MerryChristmasToYou · 26/12/2022 13:09

@TakeYourFinalPosition , yet so many of us on here know of it.
The person you mentioned doesn't say it in a way that sounds like Quinn, and it's short for Joaquim. nn in handwriting often looks like m.

Heckythump1 · 26/12/2022 13:10

I know 3 Quinn's, all (rather lovely) boys... and I think it's awful for a girl, sorry!

Copasetic · 26/12/2022 13:17

I know a girl called Quinn but I have a rabbit called Quinn (male)!

Wakk · 26/12/2022 16:03

Quim is very well known around here (southern England )

I really wouldn't. It's the equivalent of calling a girl Fanny imo.

Cherryblossoms85 · 26/12/2022 16:05

It's a last name.

mishl · 26/12/2022 18:35

From an Irish perspective, it's a surname, not a given name.

I have heard of American girls called Quinn though e.g. Quinn in "Daria".

I'm aware of "quim" as an archaic/literary term but I've never heard anyone in real life actually use it. And Quinn is a very common surname in the Irish community, and I've never heard anyone get teased about it.

Luredbyapomegranate · 26/12/2022 22:19

I know of 3 teen girls who are calling themselves Quinn as part of taking on a non-binary identity, so I suppose it’s unisex.

I wouldn’t use it for either in part because I guess it will develop an association with this, and also the quim thing

Purplemagnolias · 27/12/2022 08:10

I know 3 boys/teens called Quinn.

One of them is actually called Quench, not sure about the other two

I find it masculine sounding, like Finn or Flynn

Purplemagnolias · 27/12/2022 08:13

The Quinn I know has never had any mention of quim... he probably doesn't know what it is either

But it's always brought up on mumsnet.

KeepingTheWaterOut · 27/12/2022 08:22

The only Quinn I know is female. It's ok in print, but looks too close to quim in handwriting.

A better word
That's often heard
Would not be cunt but quim.
