At first thought, would you associate the name Quinn to be a boy or girls name?

Girl.... because of Glee

pictoosh · 26/12/2022 10:23

Actually like this name and for either boy or girl. I know of one (boy) and it suits him.

MiniHouse · 26/12/2022 10:33

Boy, short for Quentin, I thought, like the illustrator, Quentin blake. Though maybe the spelling is different.

BenchOfCompany · 26/12/2022 10:37

Girl because of a main character in Glee.

But it does sound way too close to Quim. My head then visualises a Viz fake ad for Trim your Quim which I saw in the 80s. Sorry. Too easy for secondary school children to misuse the name.

stargirl1701 · 26/12/2022 10:38

I know a boy and a girl named Quinn.

33goingon64 · 26/12/2022 10:48

Either. I know a Quintilla who is known as Quin (she is 5th child). But it works on a boy too. Never heard of Quim, is that even a name??

CoffeeBoy · 26/12/2022 10:50

Makes me think of dr quin medicine woman. Was that her surname though?

Quim is not a name, it is slang for female genitalia.

Really??? Never heard it!

ladygindiva · 26/12/2022 10:57

Either . Dp and I were going to name our DC Quinn regardless of sex because although our first child together, it would have been the fifth child of our blended family. However it was twins and I wasn't up for naming the other one Sextus or anything like that so we didn't. Lovely name.

Yes, definitely. Well known, I thought. Quite strong and very vulgar.

Krakenwakes · 26/12/2022 11:01

Quinn is an anglicised spelling of an Irish boy’s name and surname.

SiobhanSharpe · 26/12/2022 11:06

It's basically a surname/family name so I wouldn't use it unless it had those sorts of associations for me.
I also think it's more a boy's name, partly because of the quim thing and also because of the 70s song 'The Mighty Quinn'.
(And it's a bit similar to Quentin which is ... not great)

topcat2014 · 26/12/2022 11:08

For a boy. I always assumed it was shortened from Tarquin.

Rubyupbeat · 26/12/2022 11:09

I know 4 Quinns age from 2 to 35, all boys.

itsme432 · 26/12/2022 11:15

Thanks for replies.
I know this is a unisex name, however I like it for a girl.

I'm in the UK and have never ever heard of 'Quim', I have mentioned the name to family members and they haven't mentioned Quim either but some asked if it was for a boy so just wanted to see which gender people would first associate the name with🤷‍♀️

I also never heard Quim except on here. Is it regional or very old slang or something?

SnowWayOut · 26/12/2022 11:20

I've got a 4-year-old boy called Quinn.

I knew about the quim thing but don't think most people have heard of it/would think of it/would mention it, and kids his own age certainly wouldn't know it.

mybrainisbusybeingawesome · 26/12/2022 11:21

My DD is Quinn! I love it although I'm biased. In my part of the UK quim isn't a word that is used. I've never heard of it outside of MN.

When DD was born there wasn't any other females that we'd heard of with the name. Now there's 4 others that we've met (ages 2-7). She gets lots of lovely compliments and totally suits her name

Krakenwakes · 26/12/2022 11:24

Quim is a normal word - in the dictionary, as vulgar British slang. It’s not regional.

Talaforniababe · 26/12/2022 11:38

Well it's a surname and surnames are always ridiculous as first names.

My surname is Andrew, which isn't a ridiculous first name 🤦‍♀️
