Can I call my second daughter this?

Irishprincesswarrior · 22/12/2022 21:53

My first daughter is named Aoife Grace. I love it. I’ve known I’d have a girl called Aoife 2 years before she was born.
I’m now pregnant with our second daughter. Her middle name will be May, after a late family member.

Do you think AVA is too close to Aoife?
I quite like it.
We wanted another A name.
So far we have:
Aria
Aida/Ada
Ava
Anya
Aurla

Thoughts or suggestions?

I think they are too similar. What about Aine? Also Irish so fits with Aoife and very pretty.

Shinyredbicycle · 22/12/2022 21:55

Of those, I like Aria and Anya, although I'm of the 'give children names with different initials' brigade.

CranberryPecan · 22/12/2022 21:56

Yes I do, sorry. Too close.
Anya would work well and is my favourite of your other choices.

stairgates · 22/12/2022 21:57

How is Aoife pronounced

GoldenGorilla · 22/12/2022 21:57

Aoife is often anglicised as Eva and the way some people say it sounds more like Ee-va rather than Ee-fa, so yeah I think Ava is much too similar.

I like these two, too

GoldenGorilla · 22/12/2022 21:58

And I don’t really like same initials - growing up we had three people in the house with the same initials and it did cause issues with opening of post etc.

DancingSober · 22/12/2022 21:58

Yes too similar.

I love the suggestion of Aine / Anya

Also love Ailis

MakeWayMoana · 22/12/2022 22:00

You can’t have another a name ending with an ‘a’ sound, it’s too similar.

If you need it to be an A name (I’m another one who thinks you should give them different initials), I think it will need to be a different sounding one. Like…

Alice
Annie
Annabelle
Autumn
Amber
Alexis
April

3luckystars · 22/12/2022 22:01

It’s way too similar and I don’t think it really goes with Aoife either.

Don’t get set on the initial as it might limit you and you could rule out something lovely.

do you like Olwen, or Orla

stairgates · 22/12/2022 22:01

Thankyou @GoldenGorilla

What a lovely name!

NannyR · 22/12/2022 22:02

Aoife and Anya sound really nice together. Aine would go nicely with Aoife too - I think it's pronounced slightly differently to Anya?

MissyB1 · 22/12/2022 22:03

If they must have the same initial then I would choose Anne (I love simple names), or Alice.

NewToWoo · 22/12/2022 22:11

Yes Ava is way too close. I love Anya but would go for the Irish name Aine to fit with Aoife. I must confess I find most Irish girls' names quite ugly but these two are lovely.

shreddies · 22/12/2022 22:35

It's pretty much the same name! Orla is lovely if you like Irish names

shreddies · 22/12/2022 22:35

Sorry you wanted an A name.

Of those on your list Anya is lovely and would go well

TabithaTittlemouse · 22/12/2022 22:36

I really like Annie as an A name.

Irishprincesswarrior · 22/12/2022 22:45

Thank you all.

my partner and I both have names that begin with A. I liked the name aoife generally, it wasn’t planned that she was an ‘A’. I live orla, but
I feel like our sencond daughter might feel left out with a different initial! 😂

We also live in Europe, and aoife is a nightmare for anyone to pronounce, so I was hoping for something more similar. I’ve scrolled through A names for hours and nothing European jumps out at me at all. Nothing that hasn’t been used in our direct family anyway.

I know, I’m not asking for much am I?!

I'm in the minority because I don't think Aoife Grace and Ava May sound too similar at all. But there are other Irish A names that are also pretty -

Ailbhe (Al-va)
Aideen (Ay-deen)
Ailis (Ay-lish)
Aisling (Ash-ling)
Alannah

DancingSober · 22/12/2022 22:50

How about Audrey?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 22/12/2022 23:11

As Aoife is Irish

Aisling (pronounced Ashlin)

Aoibhin (pronounced Eve-in)

DBro and I have the same initials. Only caused one minor problem growing up, which wouldn't even be able to happen in these days of digital finance.

DH, DD and I all have all the same initials, although dd has and extra one (we are both XYZ, DD is XXYZ). Obvs dh and I couldn't help it for our own names. DD's name is a combo of family tradition and a place name very meaningful to us. Although it does mean that she has the same initials as dh and I, it's never been a problem.

DS has complete different initials apart from his surname.

In short, Sibs withh the same initial is not a problem in my experience, but Aoife and Ava are too similar sounding.Ana is excellent though.

3luckystars · 23/12/2022 06:48

Alina or Allie are nice with Aoife and also one of my favourite girls name ever: Andie

DramaAlpaca · 23/12/2022 14:14

Anya, which is on your list, is a European name.

I agree with this. Ava is way too close and any A---a name also feels too matchy, to me.
