Im almost due and struggling to decide between the three names above. I think I prefer Hamish and Rory to Ivo but not sure which. Surname is one syllable, Scottish (but we don’t live in Scotland) and fairly common.

Plenty of people do, @MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake , I have a friend who'd say it as Vovy, and another who would say it as Wowy

SnackSizeRaisin · 09/12/2022 13:09

Rory is too popular but I like the other two

It's just that I know lots of Irish adult Rorys and none of them have ever mentioned this as being an issue. Apart from one who spent some time in Vietnam where the R comes out more like an L.

Do a lot of people on this thread struggle with their Rs?

My 8 year old doesnt pronounce his Rs, and calls his sister Wosie.

He technically can pronounce his Rs with some effort after speech therapy, but still doesn't most of the time 🙄

His sister couldn't pronounce k when she was young, but grew out of it by age 7.

My nephew couldn't pronounce L but he grew out of it too.

I dont think it's that uncommon not to pronounce certain letters properly when small, but I guess you can't predict which letter it will be, so not choosing a name due to a certain letter might be a bit daft.

KirstenBlest · 09/12/2022 13:28

@MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake , it could be regional. If you watch Corrie, Sally says Rosie with a lancashire R. When I was at primary school, 2 of the (not many) children had Welsh names with 2 Rs in, and both said them as V. One had speech therapy, and was fine, the other still says their name strangely.

Not the actual names but something like Aurora and Rory.

Purplemagnolias · 09/12/2022 14:21

It's funny because people always advise against the name Rupert in case of mispronouncing the R. But Wowy sounds a million times worse Shock

MumChats · 09/12/2022 14:34

I really like rory

Firebird83 · 09/12/2022 16:27

Hamish is great

Yika · 10/12/2022 10:00

3 great names. You can’t go wrong!

DillDanding · 10/12/2022 10:01

I love Hamish or Ivo. Hate Rory.

RateMyNames · 11/12/2022 00:14

Rory is beautiful but just a bit too popular IMO. So I vote Hamish!

Junebug22 · 11/12/2022 12:54

I can’t stand Hamish but maybe that’s because I’m Scottish and it always seems so stereotypical to me?? Rory is lovely but VERY popular now in Scotland. Would be my pick out of the 3. We wanted a Scottish name and if a friend hadn’t gone for Rory right before us, we would’ve picked it. We also liked Ruaridh (Roo-ray as opposed Roar—ay) but lots of people struggle with its spelling -including me!

JamSandle · 11/12/2022 12:55

Rory

AllMyExesWearRolexes · 10/04/2023 21:33

If you have a Scots surname go Rory & spell it Ruaridh...

Different pronunciations though.

AllMyExesWearRolexes · 10/04/2023 23:47

@MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake
Is that so? I didn't know that, my mum always tells me that she nearly called me Rory and wanted to use that spelling. What is the difference between the pronunciations?
I ended up not being Rory after all...

Rory = roar-y

Ruaridh = roo-a-ree

I prefer plain old anglicised Rory tbh

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 11/04/2023 03:57

Ivo. Rory is awful. Don't like roar in a name and becomes woarwee to some. Hamish sounds like a 75 year old, or a golden retriever.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 11/04/2023 04:08

Rory all the way - nice strong name and means warrior

user1492757084 · 11/04/2023 08:26

All three are nice names.
Hamish 9/10
Rory 8/10
Ivo 7/10
Ivor 9/10
I struggle to know how to say Ivo.
EE- vo
EE- bo
Eye-vo
You might know Ivo really well in your district and it could be perfect.
Do you like Ivor - EYE-vuh

ilikethewayyoumove · 11/04/2023 08:33

I have a Rory ❤️
I also like Ivo and Ivor and Angus were all on my boys name list!

NotHangingAround · 11/04/2023 09:25

I love Rory. The other two are OK.

FluffMagnet · 11/04/2023 09:28

Rory

ChocChipHandbag · 11/04/2023 09:37

Yeah, Ruaridh (which I think is actually more correctly spelled Ruairidh) is definitely pronounced ROO-ree rather than Rory. I was at school with one.

I wouldn't know if Ivo was eye-vo or ee-vo. It's not Scottish is it?

ididntwanttodoit · 11/04/2023 13:19

I love them all, but Ivo does sound as if it's short for Ivor (I've no problem with that, I'm just saying )
