Classic but not super common boys name

I like the sound and vibe of the name Alexander, but would prefer something less common. It doesn’t need to be really rare- I’d prefer it if everyone has heard of it. Something where there’s less likely to be lots in the class. Without meaning to offend others, not keen on names I think of as more trend-led/of the moment like Arlo/Albie/ Roman. Not keen on what I’d think of as cheeky chappy names like Ronnie/Alfie. Not keen on more 80s names I see suggested on theses forums like Simon/Peter/Thomas. Names like Vincent/Felix/Quentin bit too left -field for me. Like Laurence but can’t use.
If you didn’t die of boredom reading that, please help !

Reginald (Reg or Regie)

MrsSamR · 07/12/2022 09:10

Monty (Montgomery/Montague)
Bertie (Albert/Bertram)

These would have been my choices but I had 2 girls!

Look at names of your uncles and great-uncles:
I was going to suggest: Mark, Paul, John, Andrew, Simon, Richard, Robert, Roger, Jeremy, Nicholas, Alan, Gavin, Douglas, Peter, Graham, Calum, Timothy, Christopher (not Kit), David, Stephen, Michael

FlamingoBabe · 07/12/2022 11:20

What about Aled?

Similar feel to Alex but you don’t hear of many!

Thanks for all the suggestions- we made a shortlist from them, but think the top 3 might now be Alexander nn Ally/Alec, Alistair or Joseph.
Had a moment of love for Aubrey but then decided it sounded like my toddler saying strawberry!

Alexander is number 27/100 in the UK, two if my friends have Alex's under the age if 2. Just thought I'd mention it as you said you didn't want a popular name xx

FlamingJingleBells · 07/12/2022 21:50

I'd go with Xander as the nn for Alexander because Alex is so popular. I know six Alex and one Alexis through school but no Xander's.

Purplemagnolias · 07/12/2022 22:38

If you don't want popular, definitely avoid Alexander. We know soo many boy and girls called Alex/Alexander/Alexandra!

Purplemagnolias · 07/12/2022 22:38

I like Aubrey

wishing3 · 08/12/2022 09:16

Id started telling myself that number 27 wasn’t that high. Maybe it’s weighted more towards the top ten. I don’t know many Alexander’s but I guess that’s not representative. Hmmm, Joseph is less common .

Not keen on Xander.

@wishing3 , Alexander has been in the top 20 names for most of the past 30 years. Add to that the Alexandras and Alexas, and the Aleksanders, the just Alexs, and the Xanders, it is not an uncommon name.

I don't like Xander either, but I like Alex, Alec, Ally, Sandy and Sasha.

CaveMum · 08/12/2022 11:09

Personally I would always go with the full version of the name which makes it easy for the child to choose which nickname they want to use growing up. Both of my kids have names that lend themselves to multiple shortenings but to date they've both stuck with the full version.

I'd started telling myself that number 27 wasn’t that high.

Add to that the number of Alexes, Alexeis, Alexas, Alexandras etc as well as the huge number of years that they were popular, there will be LOTS of male and female Alexes out there!

Theo - Theodore

KirstenBlest · 08/12/2022 14:18

@Callieviolet , if you add all the Theos and Theodores together it's the most used name.

I’ve only met one Theo so I assumed it to be uncommon 😳

I only know one and he says it as 'Tayo', so I assume that's how it's said. A colleague has a son called Theo (Theodore) but he says it wrongly, but he's american Smile

wishing3 · 08/12/2022 18:54

Hmm, maybe Joseph then…

InvalidCrumb · 08/12/2022 23:18

Joseph is less common than you'd think. I've met way more Dylans, Charlies and Theos. But that's only a small sample size!
