Thoughts on the name Phoenix?

Due baby girl soon, love the name Phoenix. Possibly Nixie for short.

Appreciate it isn't 'traditional' but I love more unusual names.

Thoughts?

In order:
Phoenix, Arizona (hotter than hell)
Phoenix aka Jean Grey from.XMen (ender of worlds)
Phoenix from Gladiators
Fawkes the Phoenix from Harry Potter.

Don't love it I'm afraid. A little too hippie for my taste

steppemum · 29/11/2022 12:38

I know a couple of kids called Phoenix.
They are both non-binary/transgender and have changed their names and chosen Phoenix as their new name.

I do like the sound of it, but I think I would assume the child was male? (which I appreciate is ironic given my first comment)

CallieQ · 29/11/2022 12:38

Nah

HandlebarLadyTash · 29/11/2022 12:40

It's a popular name and not as unusual you think. That said it's your child an you get to pick the name

minticecreamisjustok · 29/11/2022 12:40

I like it although only heard of boys being called this.

loz1996 · 29/11/2022 12:40

A friend of mine has a little boy named Phoenix, it's a lovely strong name but I think best suited for a boy.

arthurfonzerelli · 29/11/2022 12:51

River Phoenix would be my first thought (and then Joaquin), followed by Phoenix Arizona.

I think it's a little "out there" but if you think you can pull it off, go for it.

I would initially think of it as a boys name, but I think maybe one of the spice girls as a daughter named Phoenix?

ChocoFudge · 29/11/2022 12:54

I like it but I would assume it was a boys name

PearlclutchersInc · 29/11/2022 12:54

Raising Arizona....

Not a fan but I prefer traditional names. Whatever you do don't go with any wierd spellings please!

Starstruck2020 · 29/11/2022 12:58

I personally think it sounds more like a masculine name and it wouldn’t be something I’d choose for a daughter.

DuchessOfSausage · 29/11/2022 12:59

People will spell it as Pheonix or assume he is Felix.

SavouryFlavour · 29/11/2022 13:01

My first thought is Phoenix Nights, followed by 'Isn't that what Mel B called her baby at the height of the Spice Girls fame I wonder how old she is now oh my god she's 23 that can't be right bloody hell I am so old'

Needmorelego · 29/11/2022 13:02

I know one. A boy. I thought his name was Felix for about 3 years until I saw it written down.

DuchessOfSausage · 29/11/2022 13:06

Scary Spice is 47! Ginger Spice is 50! How did that happen?

MollyOffHerTrolley · 29/11/2022 13:06

I suppose it could get shortened to Fee? Not a fan I'm afraid though either of Phoenix or Nixie.

gaf · 29/11/2022 13:15

I really don’t like it, never have. It’s a bit try hard, somehow. Also the only Phoenix I know changed their name to Phoenix, to rise from the ashes I guess… 🤷🏻‍♀️

dragonbreaths · 29/11/2022 13:23

definitely a transwoman name

Rauha · 29/11/2022 13:25

I don't like it

Onnabugeisha · 29/11/2022 13:27

I think Phoenix is a lovely name and the mythological Phoenix is actually female. I’d just call her Nix for short.

RandomMusings7 · 29/11/2022 13:33

dragonbreaths · 29/11/2022 13:23

definitely a transwoman name

Or a drag queen

Vinvertebrate · 29/11/2022 13:35

My friends has a DS called Phoenix - he has hated the name since the age of about 4 and now goes by "Finn". Much better.

DotDotDotDotDot · 29/11/2022 13:37

I met a lovely little boy at playgroup recently with this name. His mum came across as quite arty/bohemian/middle class so I think they could pull off a name like Phoenix. Otherwise it might seem a bit naff to be honest.

orbitalcrisis · 29/11/2022 13:44

Might be a good name for a child of divorced parents, a child rising from the ashes of their parents' doomed relationship. But I might be overthinking it!

alongtimeagoandfaraway · 29/11/2022 13:46

Anything called Phoenix always makes me think it comes after a disaster of some kind. Eg a school with Phoenix in its title has almost certainly been in special measures or had challenging circumstances in the past.
In a child, I’d assume there had been family problems before its birth.
Not a fan of the name.
