The name Erin, I dislike it, it is my wrongness

I have a problem with the name Erin. It does something strange to me. Objectively it is a normal kind of name but when I hear it, it makes my scalp tingle. I know this my fault; I have nothing against the name. Does anyone else have this kind of thing? I don't mean like when people say the name Margot reminds them of maggots. I have no time for that nonsense. This is a visceral thing.

I have this with the word ‘petite’ used in English language

Rebecca34 · 22/11/2022 14:00

It literally means Ireland. Living in Ireland, I don't think I've come across any though, its more popular with people of Irish descent living outside Ireland.

I think its a nice name.

I have a weird reaction to the name Sharon though.

ThorsBedazzler sorry you feel a sense of injustice

It is totally a nice name, i am not meaning to be nasty about the name.

Don't like Erin either...it's very clunky and frumpy to me. Zero elegance and not feminine.

I feel the same way about the names Harriet and Imogen.

Also I shudder when I hear the name Oscar. No idea why

I am going to ask for this to be removed as it is not how I intended

Reminds me of Erin Walton who got preferential treatment because she was the prettiest. Maybe that's why you don't like it? But you're probably much younger than me.

No need to.

fairycupcakes · 22/11/2022 14:07

@CustomerService you have synesthesia!

I think of her too. I used to watch The Waltons when I was in the sixth form.
I reckon everyone has some name or other that they don't like the sound of and don't get why others do.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 22/11/2022 14:12

I don't think there are any names that give me scalp tingles but some names definitely have colours attached. Harriet is a really dreary sludgy brown colour and when I see people describe it as a lovely name I'm bamboozled.

How288 · 22/11/2022 14:16

The name Mark for me give me the chills and not in a good way, I absolutely detest it.

Omg...you are so right!

eggandonion · 22/11/2022 14:18

In Northern Ireland it tends to be pronounced Urn. In Ireland in general it was the brand name of packet soup and dried peas and similar.
It's more beloved in America, along with Shannon.

Jane is strongly cream coloured. Julian is deep orange. ENOUGH. Could go on forever.

My daughter is called Erin and she is beautiful.

Not sure what your hoping to achieve from this post really. Are you Katie Hopkins?

JaneJeffer · 22/11/2022 14:19

And Colleen @eggandonion

Mnetters generally don't like Irish names, which is a shame.

I know loads of Irish ppl and have never come across a single Erin!

I think of it as an American name - I know very few American people (compared to all the Irish I count as good friends) and know two Erins among them.

Don't have a severe hatred of it but I don't think it's in any way a nice name.

Yes I also hear Erin and think Waltons! She was my least favourite Walton child.

CustomerService · 22/11/2022 14:26

curvymumma79 your daughter is beautiful, so are you, so is her name. These things are beyond doubt. If you read what I wrote, you will see I was not saying anything against the name, it was a personal sensation to do with sound/noise.

Nate. Sets my teeth on edge and I'm sure it's a synaesthesia thing as well.
