Michael, Simon, Matthew. I’m sure they are still pretty widely used but are often given short shrift as dull on here.

Old fashioned but too early for a revival (as still too many around)

There was an Alan in my DCs nursery - he must be about 7 now but I did have to do a double take when I first heard it! Same with Graham / Nigel /Gary / Brian - no doubt these will come back in style one day!

I met three year old twins called Richard and Susan recently. To me their names were much more surprising than some of the 'out-there' names I've heard.

puddingandsun · 21/11/2022 22:29

Wish OP had given some examples of the names she likes.

Old names are quite fashionable at the moment.
The names out of fashion would be David, Gary, Alan, etc.

Anyway, don't think Raymond (Ray) was mentioned yet and I think it's lovely.

I'm surprised by the Andrew comments! I'd if said it was a ageless name and know several of all ages. There's 2 in my sons p1 class, including him, and I know of younger

SemperIdem · 23/11/2022 00:02

Old fashioned as in - so old they’re ready to be used again?

Pretty much all of these names are currently in use. Unless you’re going very old and then it’s names like:

Alaric
Wulfric
Aethelstan

or

Old fashioned as in - they sound hideous and unimaginable for a newborn currently?

These names are legion:
Wayne
Gary
Darren
Dean
Ian
Martin
Kevin
Michael
Steven/Stephen
Niall/Neil

Some of these have never gone out of fashion in mainland Europe.

Ds nursery has many children called Paul, Kevin, Simon, Joseph, Alaric, Fabian, Florian. Paula, Susanna, Irena, Julia.
