Boys in my school year who would be nearly 60 now and whose names are perhaps now uncommon for babies,
Gary
Carl
Wayne
Mark
Scott
Barry
Bernard

All of the 50s, 60s & 70s names. The ones from the eras before this (which I think of as grandparent names like Arthur and Stanley) are all over every soft play centre you go to.
As well as the ones listed, names like Simon, Andrew, Christopher, Jonathan, David, Stephen, Nicholas, Robert & Richard just aren't used at the moment.

Gosh, nearly every boy I knew growing up in the 80a or 90s were called one of these names!

Boys names seem either ultra modern (Kayden, Jayden etc) or interwar (Arthur, Wilfred etc). All the biblical names are out of fashion now (Matthew, Luke, Philip, David).

I’ve got a 5 year old Leonard!

also liked Vincent, Frank, Michael

I would say all the names that were last common in the 70s and 80s are outdated, so names like Craig, Darren, Chris, Wayne, Paul etc

Old fashioned names I would guess are ones that have 'died out' and are very uncommon in any age now, like
Algernon
Clarence
Clement
Ernest
Linus
Lionel
Byron
Edwin
Walter
Herbert
Montgomery
Gilbert
Giles
Randolph
Cornelius
Albion
Cuthbert
Aloysius
Theobald
Ignatius
Abraham
Enoch
Amos
Obadiah
Silvester
Oswald
Cecil
Basil

I have a Nicholas and don’t know any others his age. Lots of the Dads of children in his year are called Nicholas/ Nick though

I think there’s a distinction between ‘old fashioned’ - the Stanleys and Alberts, and ‘unfashionable’ - the Stevens and Andrews.

UsingChangeofName · 19/11/2022 23:27

Like @BlueSuffragette said, it is now the names that a lot of 60-65 yr olds have
Paul
Gary
Dean
Christopher
Simon
Richard
Alan
Keith

and so forth. The real 'old man' names are back in fashion...the Reggies, the Alfs and so on.

GlitterNotBitter · 19/11/2022 23:53

I’ve noticed the name Carl being mentioned- I know two Carl’s and both are early 30’s so I don’t think it’s too long out of fashion. I noticed someone said the name Luke is out of fashion- it’s number 78 in the baby name charts and both my DNephew (21) and DH’s DNephew (18) are Luke. But things change so quickly!
I wouldn’t so much say that name’s like that are old fashioned- just more out of fashion. The whole Keith thing made me giggle- I know a guy who has the middle name Keith and he’s just put me off that name for life.
Interestingly I’ve just asked DH (51) who is called Paul whether he considers his name old fashioned and he says yes he does. So I guess what’s old fashioned to one person isn’t to all.

For me it would be names like:

Derek
Gavin
Gareth
Gary (I think one of these is officially endangered)
Richard
Ian
Stephen (Steve)

Names which are rarer but not necessarily old-fashioned in a bad sense to my ears include:

David
Matthew
Michael
Paul
Peter
Simon

Basically, half my class born in the late 1970s/early 1980s 😂

BadgeronaMoped · 20/11/2022 00:01

Never hear of any little Christopher, David or Matthews round here (knew loads growing up).
