What does anyone think of mona? Middle name not decided yet. I dont make the "moaner" connection but I worry other people might!

I know a few Monas and never thought Moaner

BedTaker · 11/11/2022 19:08

How can you not make the 'moaner' connection?!

But aside from that, I first think of Friends (what was wrong with Mona? Grin), then Craig McLachlan, then the painting.

There are just too many connotations, it's a no from me.

margotsdevil · 11/11/2022 19:12

It's definitely an accent thing - I don't understand how Anna can possibly become Arna 🤷🏻‍♀️

I've known a couple of Monas (one Scandinavian interestingly) and they are both lovely so I'm a fan! Scottish though so no moaner connotations...

FayCarew · 11/11/2022 19:16

@BedTaker , because the Monas aren't english, so don't say it as moan-uh

Snoopsnoggysnog · 11/11/2022 19:39

I know an American one and it sounds much nicer in an American accent.

Gummibär · 11/11/2022 19:47

If you don't have an English accent Mona doesn't sound like Moaner at all...infact I've only made the connection after reading this thread!

Exactly. I pronounce Mona without any a sound so nothing at all like Moan-a!

I think it's a beautiful name.

caitlinrose · 11/11/2022 19:53

I think it's cute. Go for it!

Berlinlover · 11/11/2022 19:57

My brother had an imaginary friend called Mona when he was three 😂

Doowop1919 · 11/11/2022 20:03

Also don't like it. But my best friend is Italian and it doesn't have a nice meaning in Italian 🙈

sopeas · 11/11/2022 20:05

Didn’t think “moaner” but did think Mona the vampiiiiireeee!! (I was a child in the 2000s) I loved the programme so no qualms with the name at all! but as others have said, to avoid “moaner” what about using Ramona instead?

ofwarren · 11/11/2022 20:10

So Mona and Moaner sound different in some accents?
They sound exactly the same in mine (Lancashire).

AllPlayedOut · 11/11/2022 20:19

I'm Scottish, definitely have a rhotic accent and it still makes me think of moaner.

AllPlayedOut · 11/11/2022 20:21

Plus the song and the vampire. I'm not a fan. It has a rather harsh sound.

Remaker · 11/11/2022 20:28

Definitely first thought is moaner, because in an Australian accent it’s the same word.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 11/11/2022 20:50

Much prefer Ramona but that got slated on here on another thread. I think it’s cute and reminds me of Ramona Quimby.

MumChats · 11/11/2022 20:54

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. I'm not keen on Ramona. Mona does seem more "hate" than "love" but I can't seem to move on from it as my favourite name! Although the Italian comment is worrying as surname is Italian. Might be a bit weird to name her something that translates offensively into Italian when it will be clear that she has Italian heritage (although no living family are Italian speakers).

Mona the vampire

Awful name.

Coconutcream123 · 11/11/2022 21:23

I hear moaner too sorry.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/11/2022 22:18

Prefer elegant Mina but I don't hate Mona -mostly because I can't help thinking of that Neighbours bloke song which was stupidly cheerful and catchy so cancels out any "moaner" connotations to me.

Penguinsaregreat · 11/11/2022 22:34

I don’t like it.

whatausername · 11/11/2022 23:09

I like it.

Doesn't sound like moaner to me.

Kite22 · 11/11/2022 23:30

In terms of middle names, I'd steer away from Lisa........

I also hear 'moaner' . Would someone be able to describe how it sounds for those who say they pronounce it a different way from 'moaner' please?

Enko · 11/11/2022 23:38

I like it. Also like Ramona

jonesy1999 · 12/11/2022 09:54

I think it's cute. The moaner connection will depend on your region / accent I think.

ofwarren · 11/11/2022 20:10

So Mona and Moaner sound different in some accents?
They sound exactly the same in mine (Lancashire).

Of course they do.

There is an R at the end of moaner. No r at the end of Mona.

So shortsighted when people think the English non-rhotic accent is the only one there is.
