How would you pronounce Cosima?

With the emphasis on the first syllable (COS-immah/COZ-immah)

OR the second syllable - like Co-SEE-ma

?

Me and DH keep coming back to this name. The only Cosima I've personally known pronounces it COZ-immah, so that's what seems natural to me and makes sense with my admittedly very limited knowledge of Italian language. But I've taken a quick look online, and it seems like lots of Americans put the stress on the second syllable. I'm wondering what people in the U.K. instinctively pronounce it as?

I'm not bothered about whether people use an S sound or more of a Z sound.

COZ-immah for me. I think it's a Greek name.

Have a 'standard' British accent (no regional accent)

TokyoSushi · 04/11/2022 13:11

COS-immah

Evivie · 04/11/2022 13:11

First one, with the emphasis on COS

RaininSummer · 04/11/2022 13:13

Co.. seema here.

Onthecuspofabreakthrough · 04/11/2022 13:15

Emphasis on first syllable, but only because a character on the said it that way. Haven't met any in RL!

mikado1 · 04/11/2022 13:18

It's Italian surely. Coz-eema. Slightly more emphasis on first syllable, quick 2nd and 3rd. Definitely not emphasis on 2nd syllable.

Ship · 04/11/2022 13:19

COSS-ima

ReedOfFate · 04/11/2022 13:22

Emphasis on the first syllable.

mummabubs · 04/11/2022 13:39

The only time I've ever known this name it was pronounced Co-seem-a. (Character in TV series Orphan Black).

Applesandall · 04/11/2022 13:39

Okay lovely, it seems so far the consensus is the first syllable. I just really don't like the coSEEma pronunciation, and it would drive me mad to keep correcting it. But hopefully most people will say it correctly.

Now the only issue is to decide whether me and DH are too lower-middle to get away with it the Cosima I know is properly posh so she suits it. I'm worried people will turn their nose up and think we're being aspirational - I couldn't care less about this personally, I just think it's a lovely name and people can think what they like about that. But maybe my daughter will care about it when she's older? Or maybe people won't care by the time she's old enough to care. Hmm 🤔

(No particular emphasis on any part!) lovely name

KickAssAngel · 04/11/2022 13:43

I'm a Brit living in the US. One of the differences in the language is that generally UK English tends to emphasize the 1st syllable more often than the US does. US pronouncing varies more between 1st and 2nd syllable emphasis.

So, you're likely to get the version you want in the UK but not in the US.

And screw if you're posh enough. Do what you want.

Dinoteeth · 04/11/2022 13:43

Cosy-ma?
