Thalia? And any other suggestions for girl or boy names DH and I might like?

I’d pronounce the ‘th’ in that- personally I prefer Talia or Tahlia although I think that theoretically the pronunciation is the same! It was one of dh’s favourite names but I just couldn’t get my head around the pronunciation. Like us it two syllables (tal-ya) or three (tah-lee-a)

Soubriquet · 24/10/2022 12:14

Tah-leah

Bluedoritos · 24/10/2022 12:15

Tally-ah

DeedIDo · 24/10/2022 12:19

Tar leah

It's yer actual Greek

user35638673 · 24/10/2022 12:19

I would have said Th like thing, A like cat, lee yah THAlia. Maybe Talia is a better spelling if you want "t" not "th".

Donaldwheresyourtroosers · 24/10/2022 12:21

Tar-lee-er

caitlinrose · 24/10/2022 12:24

It's a name I like but would never use due to the many available pronunciations.

I would try tah-lee-ah first and I can't even say why. It's the prettiest pr. by far to me and by putting the emphasis on the second syllable it doesn't roll off the tongue so I automatically want to put it on the first.

My guess is that tha-ly-ah is correct in English which I dislike (not sure, though).

I also think there are many correct pronunciations of this name so you can't really say that one pronunciation is incorrect, it's just a different language, which makes it harder to determine a pronunciation. Ancient Greek, modern Greek, English.

I visited Germany quite a few times and there is a book store chain called Thalia and it's correctly said tah-lee-ah in German. I believe in greek it's thal-ya or tha-lee-ah.

tah-lee-ah
tah-lee-ah
tha-lee-ah
tha-lee-ah
tah-ly-ah
tah-ly-ah
tha-ly-a
tha-ly-a
thal-ya
tahl-ya
etc.

It's just too complicated.

I would pick the Hebrew Talia instead which I also pr. tah-lee-ah. At least it eliminates some of the pronunciations.

Hwicks · 24/10/2022 12:24

Tah-lee-ah
That's how I would pronounce it x

TrashyPanda · 24/10/2022 12:26

With a th at the begining
And to rhyme with azalea

SummaLuvin · 24/10/2022 12:32

Tah-lee-ah

but I wouldn't feel sure

greenhousegal · 24/10/2022 12:35

Surely if you have to ask how to pronounce a name it can't be the right one instinctively?

LutherRalph1 · 24/10/2022 12:38

My name is Talia
I pronounce it Tally - a
98% of people I meet pronounce it tarlia

It's a problematic name
🤣
I'd probably pronounce Thalia like Thally a

KangarooKenny · 24/10/2022 12:39

Th-a-lea

This way, as I have known two Greek women named Thalia and this is the way they pronounced it. I didn’t know there were alternate pronunciations.

SpinningFloppa · 24/10/2022 12:42

Tar Leah

PhotoDad · 24/10/2022 12:51

I'd go with Tar-leah or Tha-leah, the first sounds more German to me and the second more Greek.

If you're looking for a name connected to the muses, why not consider Mnemosyne? 🤷

sopeas · 24/10/2022 13:18

Tar lee ah

Is this a regional thing?! I've no idea why anyone would chuck random Rs in the pronunciation 🤦🏽‍♀️

I'm in Scotland, I would say Tally-a

threegoodthings · 24/10/2022 13:21

Tar-lee-uh.

Personally though I would steer clear of names where there's any ambiguity over pronunciation or spelling.

LutherRalph1 · 24/10/2022 13:33

@FootballisLife i don't think it is! I speak with people from all over the country on the phone and they usually guess at Tarlia!

LolaSmiles · 24/10/2022 13:34

Tar-lee-ah

TheOtherBoleynGirls · 24/10/2022 13:34

I know one, and she pronounces it Thah-lee-a

Axahooxa · 24/10/2022 13:40

The Greek name is pronounced with th-sound- it has θ as its first letter.

if you want T sound, I’d remove the h and go for Talia. Then it’ll just change depending on regional accent!

thisplaceistootwee · 24/10/2022 13:47

General rule of thumb...if you don't know how to pronounce or spell a name it's probably best to not use it. It's a Greek name.

She didn't say that she doesn't know how to pronounce it, she simply wants to know how other people would say it.

There is more than one correct pronunciation in Greek, by the way.
