There one in my DD class - one of the parents is greek and they pronounce it with the hard 'TH' at the beginning.

Personally I wouldn't use the 'Th' spelling if this is the pronunciation you're looking for. I'd use Talia, Tahlia or Taliah

@Lilacsunflowers honestly I forget that there are UK accents that would pronounce the 'r' in 'tar'. To me, 'tar' and 'ta' (as in thank you) are said exactly the same way!

Thalia is the conventional spelling - pronounced Tahlya - Greek muse, can’t remember what of.

I would go for TAH-lia, although I once knew a woman who pronounced it Thail-lia, the first syllable like fail, but with a th.

@Axahooxa - but Greek names have accepted anglicised spellings and pronunciations and Thalia is spelt that way and pronounced Tahlya. I’m Greek and loved Hero as a name - in Greek it’s pronounced ee- ro with a rolled r and accent on the second syllable whereas the accepted English pronunciation is like super hero - which I wasn’t so keen on.

I'd pronounce it Tha Lee a, that's how I say it if I'm asking for the gorgeous elegant white narcissus of that name. If it was a person I'd probably ask. All the pronunciations I've heard are nice.

Thanks everyone, I'm glad I asked! We definitely prefer the softer 'th' pronunciation rather than a hard 't', so I think this one is off the cards.

What about altering the spelling slightly like Thallya, Thallia? The double L would make me say 'th' at the beginning for some reason

That would just look misspelt or made up. I think OP is right, best to go with another name.

The one I know is "Tar-leah" with the emphasis on the first syllable but, I saw it written down first and I had to ask, as wasn't sure.

(Ta - as in 'thank you' / tar and tah would all sound the same to me).
