Yes Jennifer the traditional name would have got muddled with Ira and Irene, or spelled Éile, Ellen and Eileen, which got muddled with Isla, Hélène, and Eveline.

Erin is such a nothingy name. Just syllables.

Erin was very popular in the US.
Probably because of so many Irish emigrants there.
Eire is the Gaelic name for Ireland.
Éireann ( same sound as Erin ) is used if you are saying "I am from Ireland" in Gaelic "Tá mé as Éireann"
