Which do you prefer?

I also have a George and a Matilda.

Zara
I don't like Erin at all, it's very 80's/90's and I don't think it goes as well with your other names.

watermelonwizard · 19/10/2022 09:26

@Snugglemonkey 😂😂 I am Welsh so like that it's a celtic name. I also have Irish family (but who doesn't 😅) It's a beautiful name.

I'm Irish and don't see Erin as an Irish name, I'd file it with Shannon. And also, the packet soup thing.

Zara is lovely. As indeed is Tara, which is also a place in Ireland if you're looking for an Irish connection.

(No, I can't quite put my finger on why I like Tara but Erin gives me the ick!)

GlassDeli · 19/10/2022 10:16

Zara is great. Erin sounds kind of apologetic to me, I don't know why.

Erin is the anglicised version of Eireann, which is the Irish for Ireland . Its pretty irish

I'm sure most Irish people understand the root of the name but it still doesn't make it a 'proper' Irish name in my opinion. It's an Irish-American name like the aforementioned Shannon, or Colleen. Americans sometimes give their kids random English place names like Bristol and Camden, obviously they're real places but it doesn't make them authentically English first names.

Yes exactly this, I was in the middle of typing a reply when the doorbell rang. It may have some basis in Irish but it's not an Irish name at all.

Interestingly I was going to say Zara is really widespread, but I think it might be a local thing.

I think Erin is a bit trailer park in the US, but ok here.

Here’s the popularity. Zara is on the up.

Erin

sevenbyseven · 19/10/2022 11:31

I like both. Wikipedia has a list of famous Erins and not a single one is Irish. I assumed it was an Irish name but clearly not so much in real life!

chaotical · 19/10/2022 12:08

I'd go for Zara. I think it works better with your other names. I don't think the clothing brand thing is a big deal because the name has been around longer than the brand. I had a childhood friend named Zara long before I was aware of the brand.

I like Erin but it's a bit 90s (in my area at least). I would never have even thought of the powdered soup.

DeeDeeDaisy · 19/10/2022 12:43

I see your point about the soup being a less appealing association but I still wouldn't let it put you off haha 😅

We haven't named our DD yet - due in less than two weeks and torn between Rosa, Rosanna or Clara!

In 2020, 132 baby girls were registered in Ireland with the name Erin. In addition, 8 Éirinn, 8 Érin, 7 Éireann, 6 Ériu, and 3 Eireann. Total 164, well in the top 50 names.

JenniferBarkley · 19/10/2022 13:40

Yes but that still doesn't make it a traditional Irish name. It's come back around, much like Caitlin pronounced Kate-Lyn.

Here is a tool to look at baby names since 1964 in Ireland. You'll see Erin appear with a few per year in the late 70s and then grow rapidly in popularity from the late 90s. visual.cso.ie/?body=entity/babynames

Love Zara and Tara but not Erin. It is a soup to me too.

Blixem · 19/10/2022 13:56

Zara for me but I've got a 3 year old Zara so I'm biased!

Nadal · 19/10/2022 14:08

I like both.

Zara for me but I like Erin. Reminds me of a wholesome name - probably from Erin Walton.

MrsTimRiggins · 19/10/2022 14:11

Oh I love both actually. Erin is my niece’s name, and she’s so tough and brave and beautiful and funny, so the association for me is fantastic, and Zara makes me think of Zara Phillips, a brave and bold rider who doesn’t let much slow her down, again a great association.

I prefer Zara.

Erin will always be a brand of powdered soup to me.

😂
I remember Erin soup.
I still prefer Erin to Zara, it has Irish connotations.

ChagSameachDoreen · 19/10/2022 15:43

Erin is such a nothingy name. Just syllables.
