Assisi

Met a baby Assisi today (via Zoom with an old friend) and I was surprised by how much I loved the name! Pronounced like 'Cici' with obviously an 'A' at the beginning - she is named after the saints and nicknamed Cici. I think it's beautiful and thinking about it am surprised it's not more popular? As other Italian place names are extremely popular - I know multiple Florence and Siennas and even a couple of little Romas, and a little boy named Milan. Was wondering what MN thought of this name - due an increase in popularity or think it will remain very rare?

It's no different from calling a baby Lourdes instead of Maria or Bernadette. This is more of a RC thing than something the average British protestant would be familiar with.

I think there's some celebrity who named her baby Assisi - Kardashian? Jagger?

I think the Ass at the beginning would be offputting.

@Mummysharkdoodoodoodoodoodoo

I agree with you 100% wrt names and bullying.

Bullies are going to bully. Avoiding names for fear of bullying is half way to victim blaming. It's all the way to complete misunderstanding of bullying. Bullying happens because bullies have some major issue in their lives that causes problematic behaviour.

Zion!? Bloody hell

@Mummysharkdoodoodoodoodoodoo I like the name. Immediately think of the Italian town. Jade Jagger’s eldest daughter is named Assisi. I haven’t met any in real life. As an aside I am Roman Catholic too and find some of the comments a bit rude!

Have you never heard of autocorrect?

I have been on Mumsnet for literally YEARS. You can ask MN admin to confirm. I have gone through multiple usernames and always used MN for advice on my children's names. I change my username, as many do, so the posts aren't outing. I live and work abroad and have done for years, hence why it's especially outing. I talk about this regularly on my various usernames, hence why I change names often, as a LOT of people I know use MN and it's very identifying.

As you can see from my past history linked to THIS name - I am pregnant again with a little girl who I am naming Leonora. I have already settled on this name after asking advice on MN and getting an overwhelmingly positive response.

Leonora is a family name, and we are 100% using it for my daughter. I am not considering Assisi as it is a very rare name that has been taken by a friend! It's utterly gorgeous though and I am genuinely very upset that I didn't think of it first as I would 100% use it if I had thought of it!

I LOVE baby names and am especially interested in beautiful, ancient religious names as I am religious and very interested in history, hence why I often ask opinions about names. I also am always collecting a list for future babies!`

I don't know if you're overthinking or deflecting attention due to your offensive post about Italians earlier.

I'm glad you like it! I am RC too, and agree that some of the comments are rude and a bit offensive. I don't think people would have responded in such a rude way about a name linked to a different religion.

Thank you @mathanxiety , exactly that. (Notice how I didn't copy the part of your comment about being concerned about the 'ass' sound - I'm picking and choosing the part of the comment that suits me 😂Just gonna say it before someone else does! Haha.)

It's true that the Italian city is called Siena in Italy.

Rome is Roma, Florence is Firenze, Turin is Torino, Naples is Napoli, and Sienna is Siena.

It's an acceptable English version of the name.

One of my grandmother's name is actually Roma, which I've also always loved!

It’s not my cup of tea but it’s better than yesterday’s troll who named her fictional baby after the street where she bought her fictional Birkin 🤷🏻‍♀️

Assisi is the name of a computer system I've used in 2 jobs, I would've never thought anyone would be given it as a name

I like the name Assisi and also Asra - which is the name of a software system I use at work.

soulinablackberrypie · 06/10/2022 21:28

It's the sort of name (a bit bohemian, like Amber and, yes, Sienna) I wouldn't choose myself but kind of like on other people.

Can I just take the opportunity to say I rather like Leonora!

Khakijane · 06/10/2022 21:32

What a hellish name - poor kid.

ChagSameachDoreen · 07/10/2022 09:11

Dreadful name. All I see is ass.

SeanChailleach · 07/10/2022 09:32

Such a cultural thing. I have just had to explain to the teenage that Franciscan monks and priests that I knew as a child were all kind and warm, friendly people, which imbues the names Francis and Assissi with a fuzzy glow.

So this name with the convoluted contrived background is, in a nutshell, because the parents could not decide between Francesca and Clare? You said they couldn't decide between the saints rather than having a desperate desire to connect to Italy. They should have just picked one out a hat and made the other one the middle.

Or even, horror!, hyphenate them. I'd rather be a Francesca-Clare than have all the ass/donkey potential or the very childish "Cece" nickname. Girls and women do not need further infantalised.

Longdarkcloud · 10/10/2022 00:44

One of Mick Jagger’s daughters called her daughter Assisi — child must be 20+ now .
(Mother was the product of Mick’s 2nd marriage to a South American woman).

MimosaSunrise · 10/10/2022 01:04

It’s actually A-see-zee if you’re going for how it would be pronounced in Italy. Not saying that’s how anyone needs to pronounce it here, but if we’re talking about mispronunciations there are two common pronunciations rights off the bat. One Italian, one how most English speakers will say it.
