What do you think about Killian?

Another vote for Cillian but I have an aversion to Ks

Snugglemonkey · 03/10/2022 13:13

Cillian I love. The K just looks wrong to me. It is used in Ireland too, but it looks misspelled there too. It is like Ciaran/ Kieran, some people use the K but to me it is spelt wrong. It doesn't make it more unique, just like a parent can't spell.

@Snugglemonkey normally I'd 100% agree with you but weirdly I really dislike Ciaran but love Kieran. I think it's because I know lots of lovely Kieran's.

Doveyouknow · 03/10/2022 13:25

I knew someone who changed their name from Diana because they hated being called Di. Their (somewhat bizarre) theory was being repeatedly called 'die' would shorten their life span!

There was a Killian on my DS's football team and the other boys called him Kill for short (not in a mean way - they shortened all the names eg Will, Dave etc).

That in itself would put me off it as a name.

DuchessOfSausage · 03/10/2022 13:37

I think the K looks wrong. I know a few Ciarán, all middle aged, and a few Kirans, male and female. Ciarán looks more fresh.

I'd worry that Killian might get nicknamed Killer. Diana is a lovely name.

DuchessOfSausage · 03/10/2022 13:39

That should have said I know a few Kierans, all middle-aged.

VatofTea · 03/10/2022 13:02

For the Kill Ian people, do you also think Di(e) Anne/a

I think that is very daft and rude (!)

It's a very popular name in Ireland.

Cill means church, it is similar to Christian.

No, it’s obviously not the same. Diane isn’t even spelt die anne is it. And nobody is going to ‘die Anne’ but they may well ‘kill Ian’. If she was asking about the name Cillian she wouldn’t have got responses about killing Ian. I think your post is daft.

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/10/2022 13:50

Well you at least need to spell it as Cillian, so it doesn’t sound quite so much like Kill.. but I don’t think it translates well to the UK because of the similarity of the word - why would you want Kill at the front of your kid’s name?

I think a lot of people wouldn’t want Diana for the same reason, but it’s a much better known name in the Uk, so doesn’t have the same impact.

Hohofortherobbers · 03/10/2022 13:52

It's the baddies name in the running man, so I wouldn't use it, but I'm probably the only person who knows that Grin

@VatofTea It’s not daft, it’s a very obvious point to make

Everyone understands it means something else in Irish and it works in Ireland, the question is does it work in the UK

MarshaMelrose · 03/10/2022 13:55

Wasn't that the name of baddie on a sci-fi programme? Battleship Galactica maybe?
The thing with Cillian is that peoole won't know if it's a hard or a soft 'c' and they'll get called Sillian. Like silly 'un.

TrashyPanda · 03/10/2022 14:54

Really dislike it, whichever way it is spelt.

Lilacsunflowers · 03/10/2022 16:56

Kill Ian here too...

Cillian is much nicer

  1. OP asked for reactions to the name. It’s not daft or rude to respond.
  2. There are lots of words in English that begin with “Di”, but I can only think of kill, killer, killed, killing that begin with “kill”.
  3. di-ANNE vs KILL-ian. The negative part is emphasized in the latter.
  4. There are plenty of lovely names in the world that don’t work in one language for whatever reason. It’s like the name Poonam - nothing inherently wrong with it but EVERY single native English speaker will immediately think of poo.
caitlinrose · 03/10/2022 17:50

It's okay as Cillian which is Irish.

Killian just looks wrong to me and I wouldn't want the word "kill" in my name.

Wibbly1008 · 03/10/2022 17:57

It’s the game show host from the Running Man movie from the 80s….

I like it - like Killian Jones / Captain Hook from once upon a time.. I would think you'd named your baby after that character

Same.

LaChatte · 03/10/2022 18:09

Quite popular in France, with variations in spelling (Kelyan, Kiliane etc.) and pronunciation (key lianne, Kelly Anne, K lien etc.). To be honest, I've not had a 'nice' Killain (as a teacher).

JaneJeffer · 03/10/2022 18:11

Going by this thread I don't think Britain is ready for it.

Galarunner · 03/10/2022 21:17

A really well known ultra runner and mountaineer is called Kilian Jornet. The name has a good association for me. I think he is originally from the Paye Basque.

Yes, that's it. Ooooo, I hated him. Smug git. Thank you for that. It's been niggling away at me all evening.

DramaAlpaca · 04/10/2022 00:30

It's a fine Irish name, but please spell it properly - Cillian.
